considering a role at amazon. what is the internal transfer process at amazon if I dont end up not liking the role or team? do i need to let my current manager know before I explore within amazon? or it is more of a go through the process, get the offer and then tell manager?
As soon as you find a new team that wants to hire you — there are no restrictions. For same role and city there will be no tc change. To find a new team follow there steps: 1. Don’t tell your manager or peers about any of this. 2. Look up jobs you’re interested in on the job finder portal. 3. Reach out to the hiring manager via email/chime with a brief intro of yourself and schedule a half hour “coffee chat” to talk about their team and role. I’d have a very good reason prepared for why you’re switching teams so soon 4. Tell hiring manager you’re not planning to have the conversation with your current manager until you find your next role 5. Go through informal interviews with the teams that seem interesting until you get an informal offer that you want to take (I.e. the hiring manager tells you over chime or w/e that they have decided to hire you) 6. Book a 1:1 with your current manager and explain that you’ve decided to move teams. It’ll be awkward but you need to do it. 7. Go back to your desk and click the “apply” button on the job portal for the role you’ve decided to take. It’s important this is the last thing you do in these steps (search blind for “never click the apply button” for more detailed reasons why, treatises have been written on this). 8. Have fun at your new job. Credits: Someone from Amazon posted it.
Click apply button before you talk to your manager in many cases, as managers put you on dev list if you talk to them first and then click it.
I don't agree with this. Managers have to have a detailed document ready to put you in dev plan . It's not simple that they can decide to put you on dev plan soon after u can you want to switch. Get an offer, talk to your manager and apply . People generally wait 5,6 hrs of you are in good terms with the manager and manager is supportive of the switch
If L4 or L5, you must spend at least 1 year before switching L6 and higher, no time restrictions Edit : thanks for correcting . The above rule is for internal country to country transfer. For domestic, no time restrictions, only you don’t need to be on dev plan
This is completely wrong. I've joined as L4, 4 months in already interviewing.
Ok you need to check the policy on inside portal
How about international transfers, same continent?
Thanks for all the guidance. You are all awesome!
@op do you mind sharing the process of internal transfer in apple?
It sucks at apple. 1. Find a role which you like on career website. 2. Find out who is the recruiter ( only some posts have hiring manager listed) 3. Request recruiter to have an informal chat with hiring manager. Most of the time recruiter dont give a damn for internal candidate. Or If hiring manager is listed then request an informal chat with hiring manager. 4. If hiring manager thinks you are worth spending time with then have your chat and see if hiring manager finds you interesting enough. 5. Then before moving forward with formal Interview, you MUST let your current manager know that you are interested in leaving the team and go interview somewhere else. — the worst step ever because from that day, your manager wont care about you and will try to get rid of you by any means. 6. Go through interviews and get offer. If no offer, be prepared to leave apple else will be pipd.
How can I do it in covid times ?
Because abruptly telling my manager if we can have a 1:1 will definitely alert him
What are the steps which the HM has to do after the candidate hits apply formally ?
I just received a verbal offer from another team at Amazon but my current team is holding me for six weeks before letting me transfer. Any suggestions on how I can reduce the time I’ll be stuck in limbo?
Talk to other managers, give informal loops if needed, get an offer, hit the apply button, and then tell your manager. You can change teams anytime and any number of times.
Do you tell your manager before you are sure you have got a new job?
No you won’t. You tell your manager once you get a verbal offer
