When people ask what role you want and you say backend developer. Is that not a good answer? I recently was shunned for giving that response. Im like wtf?
Backend could range from systems/embedded engineering to database administration among endless choices in between. Focus on the problems you want to solve and the tech you're most interested in using to do it.
Depends on seniority but even then I think it’s fine. But you’re asking to do horizontal development so if they prefer to have full stack/vertical devs then they might have seen that for them it wasn’t a good fit mutually. Not a big deal. Try else where.

Ok let's say you want to date, do you only say I want backend or frontend, or do you have a few more specific criteria.
Can you expand upon that, perhaps a response youd give? I'm a complete newbie
If you say you want to be just a ‘backend developer’, it means you don’t know much about it yet. Backend can mean several things. - Are you interested in data models, designing schemas and services based on them? - Are you interested in APIs and building middleware services that will be used by products? - Are you a pipelines guy? Building extract-transform-load (ETL) pipelines that process large amounts of data periodically. - Are you a distributed systems guy? - Are you an ML guy, building training pipelines and inference systems? Etc
