Feeling guilty during onboarding?

Onboarding with a new company as a DS (not LoyaltyOne) and they sent a bunch of “learn about the company” HR type videos, and links to get access to data and tools. But really there was only about a day’s worth of stuff and my manager hasn’t checked in all week. I’m trying to get hands on and find resources about the data to run a few test queries/explore the data a bit but their workflow isn’t well documented so I just end up sitting around for most of the day. Team members are mostly distributed and off while I’m on so I don’t get many answers. Is this normal for US companies? Edit: right, TC ~151k #tech #onboarding #dataanalytics #datascience

Sounds like you can get another job at the same time.

I think it’s just not a very streamlined process? There seems to be a ton of work/projects to work on.

Sounds like meta

Haha not quite that level, but at least it’s not uncommon? I just feel guilty sitting around. I can only learn about emotional intelligence in so many ways.

Not normal! Your manager should reach out more often especially during the onboarding phase to make sure you are feeling comfortable and supported. How about you reaching out to them and discussing the next steps to make sure you have all you need in order to get up to speed

Hmm. A little worried that they’re a newish manager so maybe they aren’t used to this either. That’s a good point though, I’ll setup a meeting for tomorrow and hopefully that will get me more involved.

I see. Even as a new manager, they should appreciate you reaching out and being proactive. In my mind, that’s the right thing to do. All the best! 😊

Completely normal for US companies yea

Normal. I feel like I haven’t done a thing in 2 months. No 1:1 with manager.

Normal. Had a similar experience at a mid sized org. Slow in the beginning but got extremely busy later.

Alright that’s encouraging. This is my first “high” paying job so I really don’t want to be seen as a slacker early on. I want to be learning and working.
