I’m from a shithole in Asia and all people care about is eat work fuck and clubbing, along side with buying real estate and investing. Most girls i talk to dont even know who the president is While in the US people spent an non trivial amount of time fighting about trump vs biden, dems vs rep. Am i missing something really important? Most policies don’t even affect me that much. I usually just troll my friend by sending them a text “biden’s america” with the stock market screenshot and they get pissed off so much, it’s hilarious
We're a democracy and it's at the core of our national identity.
Democracy != putting a piece of paper in a box every now and then
Are there around 96 democratic countries in the world.
Because it makes the politicians to take into account how people are going to react to their actions.
Worlds most powerful country, which shapes most of the world economic and geopolitical situation. With a vote that powerful, that it can change not just national but world scenarios, I am SO glad that Americans strive to be politically aware. I am from a south asian country and its insane how disconnected from the political reality most of the people are.
How does that affect me?
20 trillion printed in last two years is why the market showed extreme exuberance and now the tech meltdown having you almost laid off. Govt continuing to contribute to inflation to "curb inflation", lax enforcement policies leading to massive hike in crime rate. Govt inaction on reducing inflation causing fed to take up the mantle and significantly slow down the credit markets. Everything in your life is affected by the kind of leader you chose.
Because people are raised to believe since they're young that one has to take sides in everything and politics are like a sports match. You pick a team and they're the good ones you have to defend, no matter what they do. Plus, people think that a piece of paper in a box every now and then is a democracy (it's always been an oligarchy, but no one cares about using the right terms for things anymore). They're all manipulated by masses, social media, TV, newspapers...
Compared to who? I’d say a lot of losers from mainland China take politics as a religion more than Americans
Whatever side of the political spectrum you land on… I think we can all agree OP is an ignorant fool. Politics effect literally everything.
… that you have zero control over
Many Russians say “I’m not interested in politics” mantra. You see where it brought them. They also “cared about is eat work fuck and clubbing”, but then they found that their state is corrupt, their freedom of speech is taken away, their standard of living went down, and they were sent to war where the biggest price for them personally is to get back alive. It’s good that society take active part in the political life. And it’s good that there is more than one political viewpoint.
No, you’re not missing anything. People treat politics like a cult here and think they have some agency
If no one pay attention to politics and vote the wrong one, hey, now we have this war, this recession, these layoffs, interest rate hike, gas price hike, all thanks for people who do not care about politics and vote the wrong one.
Stopped reading at “I’m from a shithole in Asia”. 👍
Grew up here tho
You should be proud of your country
