Transamerica 401K

This is for my spouse. Her company offers 401k through Transamerica. Unlike my Vanguard 401k that offers a target year portfolio -- which looks simplest from setup point of view, it seems Transamerica does not offer such target year based portfolio. It offers limited options of bond, large/mid/small cap and international investment options. Is it possible for a user to choose preferred tech ETFs (QQQ, VGT etc) later, once the account is set and distributions are made through above combinations? In connection, please help educate how one can in general invest in preferred individual ETFs through 401k providers, such as, Vanguard, Fidelity, Transamerica etc. Thanks in advance!

I think it’s the employer that decides what funds to offer. We used to have Transamerica as a provider and we had vanguard target dated funds to invest in, we still have same vanguard ETFs but our provider has changed.

It is the employers choice, based on how much they pay the service.

To add, the money in a 401k is mostly owned by your company, at least while not vested, so they don't want you investing in risky stocks. Seems your only options are those they deem safe.
