Not recent, but back when they has just split, they used Sterling Infosystems and it took about 10 days. It was mostly a public data search (criminal record etc), they didn't contact and personal or professional references. They did verify my degree with my university, which is something no other bg check had done.
This was for a non-clearance jib so ymmv.

If it's Sterling get ready for a hassle and up to 3-4 weeks for results. The company is incompetent and its overworked reps work in an overseas call center. If you have any questions their English is sub par and they read from a script.
This is for sterling process that I experienced.
If you are a fresher then dont worry nothing gets checked except for checking with your Uni.
If you have some experience they try to reach out to references, but don't worry many orgs have dedicated hr number that handles just this. And if they can't reach to them its not a big deal. The person in-charge will send you an email or on website asking you for info if they feel something is required. It went quite well for me, the person was patient and polite.
