We are planning to move from SoCal to NoVa but found that most of the neighborhoods we look for have low school points on Redfin. We checked Herndon, Ashburn, Chantilly, Aldie, Gainesville and Haymarket areas. I always read in Blind that Nova has good schools but great schools ratings are always 7-8 or lower. Didn’t see even single 10 on elementary schools. Which of these cities/areas are good for school(k12), diverse community (middle eastern immigrant) and local shopping (Costco / Whole Foods etc). We both work from home and planning to buy a TH or SFH. Commuting is not an issue. TC: 220K #housing #DC #nova
Check around Rockville or North potomac. Hope you know or just Google TJ and Poolesville schools
I h8 nova
Yeah, thank you
Judging from where you work (tata), I'm sorry Nova sucks at Indian food. Coming from SF, I miss a good butter chicken....
Chantilly, Loudoun County side (the western half) This area has the best public schools in Nova. 10 for elementary, 10 for mid, and 9 for high school It's better than McClean, Vienna, any of the Fairfax county schools, and much cheaper too. A 1.2M house in Chantilly Loudoun side is 1.4M on Chantilly fairfax side. Same house in Vienna and McClean would shoot up to 2-2.5M Food is strong in this area too, but it is a longer drive to Alexandria and DC, and those 2 areas have the best food in all of DMV Chantilly Loudoun fyi, is 20 min drive to Reston, where MSFT and GOOG are. 30min drive to Alexandria, for AMZN though
Also. Take the school scores with a grain of salt, and actually click through it and see how the score is broken Modern school grading has an equity score that a lot of people don't care for, but it's worth 1/3 of a schools grade Equity is essentially how much socioeconomic diversity in that school there is, and not the funding, achievements, or teaching quality. For all the strong NOVA schools, none of the high schools are 10/10, because they all rank low on the equity score. Now. It's not because these schools don't have racial diversity. Quite the opposite. Very racially diverse schools. But since the home prices are at the 1M+ mark in all of these school districts for a family sized SFR, all the students at these schools come from very well-off families. So despite the racial diversity of all the good Nova schools, there is no economic diversity because poor parents can't afford to live in these school districts. So if you don't care about this equity score, I would only compare the pieces of the schools grading you care about If you have any further questions about homes, schools, or living in this area, DM me. I moved from SF to this area 3 years ago, and just bought a home in this area in November
Side note. If you're curious why the best school in NoVA is cheaper housing than the other strong schools, it's because the dominant employer in DMV is government and government contractors. These are mostly RTO roles, and located in DC or Alexandria. So the other good schools have more expensive housing because it's a shorter commute for the parents Me? Don't care. I work remote. 20min to Google or MSFT? I can live with that. And I hate overpaying. I left SF because of the 1M+ homes. Only to be right back in the same damn boat lol
Very useful, thanks How is the noise from being so close to IAD
Yes, this is something I wonder too, all the new neighborhoods are around the airport, is it noisy?
Is crime and safety a concern in the area?
1000x better than anywhere in CA east coast suburbs are very secluded Kids can play outside without fear of kidnapping or crackhead attacking them
Don’t. CA is the best
Orange County is not best. Nothing to do if you don’t enjoy ocean activities. Far from everywhere. La is terrible. No urban character or culture. Weather is sunny but always cold even today. There is always cold breeze in the air.
Here's a hint, dont listen to anonymous school ratings on the Internet, do some real research. You are pretty much safe moving to whichever neighborhood you can most afford. There really are no bad versus better areas, it's all about if you are willing to be inner beltway versus outer. Also, if you think you want to live by Metro for convenience, you better actually end up using it because the costs will skyrocket. Assuming you are Indian, (sorry this is blind), Ashburn area is very friendly
Where is inner belt?
I495 forms a circle around DC and is referred to as the beltway. Anything inside the beltway is going to be very high cost of living
