Got a offer from Datadog NY 220base 550k stocks/4years best cycle They provide unitedHealthCare HSA EPO and PPO plan. My wife is pregnant and baby is coming soon How do I compare which one is best for pregnancy? Here in California currently I have Kaiser and my friends had to pay nothing for child birth. Does anyone have experience with UHC?
I would recommend PPO. No comparison to Kaiser in terms of 0 or predictable payments.
do PPO over EPO. The year you have a baby, expect your wife to hit her OOP max. The EPO has unlimited financial liability because it has ZERO out of network coverage. Even if you think you can stay in network think again. One accidental bill and you’re fucked. If you want to stay on Kaiser and can, it’s hella cheap to have a baby on Kaiser. But otherwise the PPO is the way to go.
And congrats!
If you want to get fancy and the baby is coming sooooon and your wife wants her current doctors, check with HR. You may be able to: 1. Switch jobs and deny the new coverage. Pay cobra to stay on old company’s Kaiser plan for birth 2. Once baby is born, use the “life event” to switch to new employers coverage off of Kaiser. Tricky, but explore if baby is soon soon
UHC is well-known to be absolute crap in terms of paying out what they're supposed to under your coverage. Don't say you weren't warned
Really? What is your experience?
I've had epo for a couple of years already with a lot of medical expenses and coverage is fantastic as long as you stay in network, which is really easy in NYC.
Nice to know
HSA. Employer HSA contribution for family is $3k/year. In addition to that, once you hit the statutory annual required deductible ($3k in 2023), you can get Maven (another benefit) maternity reimbursement of $3k/year. OOPM is ~$6850 for 2023. You pretty much only need to pay $850. HSA monthly premium is also way cheaper than PPO. Create a spreadsheet with several scenarios and you will find that HSA is a better plan.
EPO is generally free but is in-network only. PPO is a couple hundred a month but covers you everywhere.
