I will be interviewing at Shopify and wondering about what it's actually like over there right now. I've heard wildly different opinions all over the place. I'm actually mostly happy where I'm at, I've had a lot of career growth and have really hit my stride, but my company is in kind of a downward spiral with like 5 rounds of layoffs (so far) and it seems like they're just looking to move as many of the engineering jobs over to India as they possibly can to save money. Main thing I'm hoping to avoid is like the ever present feeling that you could be replaced at a moments notice. Y'all dealing with that over there too?
It's very disorganized and that ever present feeling is also here. You won't be able to avoid that - I think generally that is the case in the tech sector right now. We will probably have more layoffs, they are quietly happening anyway. The vibe is okay depending on your team, but teams change all the time so even that won't last. The grass may not be greener over here.
100% dealing that here. To the point where I’m leaving on my own accord. The vibes are bad and everyone feels layoffs breathing down their neck.
We change comp sys every year. If you look for increasing your comp at Shopify, you need to be SLTs friends. They have big belly but their employees are thin. If you want SLTs who will take all credits for any success and then shift all blame to their employees, you will do well here. If you are good at bootlicking, you find the right company. SLTs constantly need this support for their poor judgments.
You will meet a lot of great people at Shopify. Very few of them will be in management. It is chaotic, so if you have initiative and are willing to take risks you can do pretty well.
Recently interviewed with them and honestly massive waste of time.

What’s the point of playing sports if you’re not gonna compete in the Olympics?
It’s pretty stupid company to be honest. They are gonna waste your time checking if you are a good fit for the company. It takes a long time, not paid. Also it’s mostly Canadians, so be ready for a lower salary.
