As far as I know, the people's liberation army (china) were under equipped, and had no navy or air support. How the heck did they push the US back to the 38th parallel line? Just by sheer number?
American people and government consider American lives worth more than the Chinese government and people consider Chinese lives.
Sheer numbers, and US army tactics and gear were not geared towards mass number of soldiers rushing towards them. They were using WWII style fighting which didn’t translate well. That and Mao snuck millions of soldiers at night so aircraft scouts couldn’t see them coming. MacArthur was also an arrogant fool. He thought he could go up to China’s border with no repercussions, and suggested using the atomic bomb against China until finally being relieved. Thank god we never had a hot headed guy in charge in the US since 🙄
Numbers. Sheer number. China was willing to lose like 15 soldiers for every 1 soldier. It was not a battle US wanted to engage further. China saw human population as some excel spreadsheets number. MacArthur wanted to nuke China but the US president kicked him out. US could have easily won if nuclear weapons were utilized. But at what cost? Thank goodness MacArthur was kicked out for such crazy demands.
Grindset
The PLA was hardened, veteran military force after a decade+ of war against the KMT and Japanese. While they didn’t have the kind of fire power that the Americans had, they were tough, tenacious, experienced and understood how to fight against a technologically superior enemy. In addition, the American forces in theater were never anywhere near the maximum American capacity- it was always a limited, politically difficult war. They also had significant Soviet support.
Much shorter supply lines also helped.
