I joined Microsoft in 2019 as a software engineering new grad. A few months after joining I was given ownership of a major component of the project which needed collaboration with teams across multiple orgs. I have done a terrific job delivering the component and my manager acknowledges this publicly. Although, my rewards this year were just average and frankly the praise given makes no difference on the bottomline ($$ in my bank account). Some time back I asked my manager what more is needed to get a promotion. I was told to concentrate on my deliverables and that I will get it when I am ready. I find this opaqueness quite alarming as I was given no idea of "what being ready" means. Given that after 2 years I will be earning less or almost same as I am earning currently, I think it is better to switch. Not that I am sure of getting a promotion but even if I do I doubt that the hike would be enough to make much of a difference. I am looking for company in Seattle area with good a SDE-II base pay and good stock refreshers. I know Fb pays well. What are other companies? Is not having a promotion going to work against me while interviewing? Don't want to join Amazon as SDE-II. I know they pay well compared to Microosft but after two years I will be in same situation. Both Amazon and Microsoft have an image of shitty hikes and poor stock refreshers. #seattle #swe #software #engineering #career

What was your new grad offer? Did you ever think of internal transfer? Have you asked back “what does being ready mean and where do i stand?” Because honestly, not gonna lie, any L60 should be doing those cross org projects. Key is delivering them on time and driving it alone consistently
New Grad Offer: 117k/130k/30k Hikes and refreshers at Msft vary with orgs?
1.5 or even 2 YOE applying for SDE II in Fb, Google and other more prestige company might be hard to get. Most recruiter will ask ur level and they would up level you only if the experience is a really good match. Smaller companies will take u as SDE II though.
Damn! How many years of experience is norm for SDE-II?
Indeed. DM me if you need a referral
Apple pays Bay Area wages if you can get into the Seattle office. New grads can make 200k. Interview loops can be extremely difficult though. To get an interview, you need to very closely fit the reqs of the role. No leetcode, it’s all grilling you on your specific skillet.
