Trying to choose between Google ( L6 EM) and Meta (M1) offers. I am in the Austin area. I was hoping to get 600k TC 4 but that does not seem to be happening. Is that too much for the area? I am also down leveling from M2 at my current company. I like Google better as a company, but the team I matched with at Meta seems much more interesting, it is fully remote ( have to go to office with google a few days a week ), clear path to M2 promotion, and even WLB. It seems like Meta is winning in everything but brand and stock performance. Should I really reject Google? TC Formula (4 year average) : Base+TargetBonus+Signon/4+Stock/4 Google TC : 4 year average : 430 Edit: Google updated to 520 Meta TC : 4 year average : 540 Edit: Meta update their offer to 590 Update: Both companies average 600 over first 2 years now Current TC : (210*1.1) cash + ~120k/year in pre-ipo stock : 351k YOE: 11 + masters ( 5 EM/TL ) I also have an offer from Indeed (TC: 430k ) but I think I need to add a FAANG company to my resume at this time. #offer #google #meta #fb #swe #tech #facebook #
You basically wrote a whole paragraph about how the Meta offer was way better. The only thing you say pro Google is that "you like Google better as a Company" which, really, means nothing.
Writing this helped me organize all my thoughts. I feel like the Meta offer is more compelling but where will the company be in 5 years vs Google.
Every person has different needs. I had offers from both companies a year ago. Facebook's offer was stronger. WLB, stability and more mature coworkers are more important to me than higher compensation. That's why I picked Google. I also find Google's business practices more ethical than Meta's (it's my personal opinion, others may disagree). What are your other priorities? Can you rank them?
Sorry for the wall of text. Here are my main factors roughly ranked. 1. WLB : I don't want my work to be my life. I am fine with putting in a solid 40. Manager at Meta cares a lot about this. Top notch for meta, who is known for having mediocre WLB. Confirmed this with director and the team. Was told WLB at google would be middle of the road which is not inspiring. But maybe middle of the road for Google might beat good for Meta? 2. Remote Flexibility: I don't want to spend hours in traffic. Google does not even have parking in the Austin office so I would likely have to take a shuttle. Google manager claims flexibility but not sure it will be realized. Meta role is remote. 3. Interesting Work: The team at Meta's work is very interesting, would be working on higher profile work that would affect the image and ethics of the company. 4. Growth: I would love to be able to get back to M2. Meta has a very clear plan on this for me. Google also has that possibility at the role, but not as clear and I have heard it is much harder to do in general. 5. Comp: I don't want to work forever. I would love to be able to build up some savings and retire early. M2 promotion would have massive impact on comp as well. Meta will likely also counter offer even higher than above. 6. Company Health: I don't want to join a sinking ship, stock options are useless if they are worth nothing. Meta is much higher risk bet. 7. Company Image and Ethics: I always wanted to work for Google and did not care for Facebook. I thought this was really important to me. However my conception of Facebook is much different after talking to old coworkers that work there now. Meta is making a massive push for integrity and privacy all throughout and I can be a part of that change. I also care about how this looks on my resume in the future. 8. Matching my expertise: Google matches my technical expertise pretty well so that would be a good fit. My expertise would also be useful at Meta but I would have to learn a lot as well. As a manager that is less important though. I really really want to join Google but it does not seem to add up to me.
It sounds like you found the answer to your question. Best of luck! πππ
Google is low for the level with remote. I just went through a bunch of loops at E6 level, remote from a lower COL location in midwest, and almost every offer broke $500k, and the only one that didnβt was still $40k above that Google offer. Itβs crazy they offered you that.
First year TC is 516k, averaged the 2 year is 491k. Due to the front loaded nature of the stock options 4 year always looks sad at google.
That first year TC is closer to what Iβve seen averaged over first four years. Staff-level offers for MCOL should definitely be able to top $500k per year.
Voted Meta. Can you give offer breaks of Meta 590k?
225 base 20% bonus 90k signing 1,200 stock over 4 years
congratulations π go for Meta.. you can handle if something unexpected happens at Meta.π
Wow those are fantastic numbers. Congrats. I would personally do Google because of better wlb
Is 600k for Austin area?
How did you get 430k TC offer out of indeed in Austin. Is this for a director (L5) or L4? That's a very high TC for Indeed in Austin
How can I be you. 500k geez
If you want to stay at the same company for a few years, then Google is a safer bet. Nobody knows how Meta will do in two, there or four years from now.
Yeah Meta is definitely more of a bet. Would I buy buying the dip or joining a sinking ship.
if you care at all abt skills/learning etc i'd join Meta over Google, or if you plan on pursuing entrepreneurship after
