I interviewed for AWS L6 after 5 yoe @ Azure, but got a down leveled L5 offer (kinda expected). Interview went really well, it’s a team of my choice and related to my current work. But, I was borderline for L6. Recruiter promised they are working on a strong out of band L5 offer ~375k-400k TC. Also, they said it’s more likely for me to get a faster promo to L6 given the strong L5 offer. I know this is usually not the case and l5->l6 promo can be very painful in AWS. Plus, I will need to ramp up coming from Azure background but hopefully shouldn’t be too long given I have decent context on the product/service. How long do you think it will typically take for a promo in this case? I am going to try and set some expectations with HM before accepting the offer. But, I know they will soft-commit anything to hire me atm. Any tips on how can I speed the L6 promo. I just got 63 promo at Msft so having a hard time accepting L5 offer where I will be struggling on the Senior path all over again. But, the TC bump might be too good to pass. Kinda indecisive between growth and TC 🙆🏻♂️ I see a bunch of Amazon L6 with 5-6 yoe who joined Amazon out of college. Sure they have more context on AWS, but I think my current scope of work at Msft can’t be far off. Current TC: ~200k 🥜 Expected new TC: 375-400k (cash heavy first two years)
I was at Amazon for 2018-2020 and was in similar situation. Strong L5, borderline L6 yada yada. Don't believe the fast promo to L6 BS. Promotions at Amazon work very differently than Microsoft and it's going to be a minimum of 2 years but most probably 3 years before you can get promoted.
Don't accept the L5 offer. If you were 'borderline' re-apply in a year. The reason I say this is because if you take the L5 offer, even at top of band, if you get promoted to L6 say in two years, you will get almost no pay increase. When you get promoted you go into the bottom of the band for the next level, for at least one review cycle. From what others say, your L5 offer is already in L6 territory which means a promo would get you no pay increase just more responsibility. So what's the point? So if you're almost an L6, wait a year, apply again, do better in the interview, and get a top of band L6 offer.
But the TC increase (100% or slightly more) is too good to pass? Maybe, I can interview and try switching to say Google L5 or Uber L5 (or similar) after getting promoted to L6 in 2 years?
If the offer is a lot more than what you're currently making, then that could be worth it. Just set your expectations that your TC will not increase for years even if you get promoted.

Why do Indians lie so much about their skills/experience?
It’s really impossible to answer this without knowing the team you’re going to and how good you are If you onboard and you’re an incredibly a strong L5 it’ll probably take a couple of years to get to L6 If you’re meh, 4 years+
Technically there's a chance to get fast track promo via mishire. Takes 6 months. Never seen it happen though. Otherwise your estimate is on point.
So basically: 2-4 years; sounds discouraging 😖😒
