i just got laid off after around a year of full time work as a software engineer. i have a bachelors in CS and a bunch of previous internships (4) but only 1 year of full time experience. i’ve been given 4 months severance but i’m not sure if i should spend my time preparing for interviews to find a new gig to pad up my resume, or if i should take a a risk and try to turn one of my side projects into a startup. i live at home and i’m not in any debt and have no other financial responsibilities. not sure what would be more beneficial for me, any thoughts or advice? #tech #career #startup
only 1 yoe.. start job hunting dude.
not my fault i was laid off :/ vmware was cost cutting and i got unlucky. i’ve been job hunting but i’m not sure what jobs to target bc most entry level positions are either looking for new grads or ppl with 2+ yoe. don’t want to downgrade, but don’t want to be overlooked because not enough yoe, you know?
i never said it’s your fault. just saying that no one’s going to respect or listen to you if you become a startup founder/ceo with 1yoe.
If you’re young and full of energy, always take option b, start your side business and launch a business. If it fails, you learn from failure and improve on your previous experience or just apply for another job and work as a slave for someone else to make them more money
In this pandemic so many small businesses got shut down for good dear
I agree, but there are also many businesses that benefited greatly due to this pandemic because of the nature of their product and business model, at the same time, some businesses shifted their business models as well in order to fit the pandemic. It depends on how you look at it, either the glass is half full or half empty.
No offense but anyone can come up with an app idea and many here can code it. Do you have a business and growth plan? Concrete customer group you're targeting? Contact with investors? Etc.? Until then it's just a hobby and no hobby is paying you 6 figures.
None taken. It was a project I worked on the side during my last gig, but to answer your questions: yes there is a plan, a roadmap, actual paying users (not many, it’s in closed beta but they’re giving feedback to help improve the product), and know investors (does not mean they will invest lol, need traction first). It’s a little more than a hobby since it has momentum, but not a startup by any means. Growing and scaling it to a point where I can earn 6 figures from it will take a ton of work - a lot more work than a tech job would.
How long would it take for you to get to a point where you are either fairly certain it will succeed or fairly certain it will fail? If you can make it that long and won't regret burning thru savings, you can LC while working on the startup
Find the job, keep grinding on the side so you have a steady income and prep for worst case scenario
If you need validation from a bunch of anonymous people to start a company, then the answer is No. You are not ready to be the leader of leaders.

Car accident at my fault, how to avoid paying the damages?
Do you have a way to monetize your side idea? Have you calculated the numbers? Can you get a full time job and grow your startup on the side until it is profitable?
1. yes - the tech is production ready. i just need to launch and sell it, which is more work than building it in the first place. 2. yes - it can be profitable, need to become a salesman tho. 3. yes
If you’re ready to hustle, I’d get a full time job and grow the side gig until it is profitable.
