Is Softbank the worst VC?

Every single investment of Softbank seems to be back firing. Saw news that OYO, Wework, Getaround are laying off employees. It seems to me that if it is for anybody to be laid off it is the investment managers and the partners. Pathetic!

Yes. The founder is an idiot. His investment strategy is “gut feeling” and he is proud of it. He only got lucky with alibaba

The bad ones get press but they also funded Nvidia, Uber, Slack, ARM, Getaround, Doordash, SoFi

Except for Nvdia and ARM, every other company have issues. ARM was an acquisition not funded through their vision fund

Uber dkmb82 Jan 11, 2020

I’d say Uber is pretty successful as well, you know just being the fasting growing tech company EVER.

There are lots of terrible VCs these days. Anyone with a few million dollars is trying to find the next unicorn with a shitty business model that only grows by raising more money at a higher valuation than the prior round. SoftBank is just the poster child. Ultimately this is all a symptom of too much money in the system trying to chase returns.

VC is a numbers game, I suspect 50/50 success rate would be considered pretty good but sometimes they're going to hit some massive failures.

Unlimited money will make anyone a good investor. Cuz it's a numbers game.

They seem to be a negligent and capricious VC, but the layoffs right now seem to be less that they backed the wrong horses, and more like kneejerk reactions after the WeWork debacle

maybe the luckiest too
