So I interviewed for Google and passed, waiting for a team match. I specifically interviewed for ML. Now given that there aren’t any new external open roles, ML roles are even rarer. I feel that confining to only ML roles limits the possible teams that I can match with. Is it better to be a generalist than ML in this environment? Or, are the new roles going to be all ML going forward?
ML roles are probably safe from layoffs.
Not really. People in my org who worked on ML were let go. Layoffs have happened across the org. If you work on ML for a non-priority product, that doesn't help. You have to be working on AI for a priority product (like Gemini or copilot) to be considered safe.
