"If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results, employee morale will decrease," he said. "I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world." Glad there are CEOs that still have common sense in regards to how short term employee moral contributes to both short and long term company success. FYI- Article is from 2013 but seems to hold true given they’ve done micro layoffs (a few hundred folks since 2013). https://www.polygon.com/platform/amp/2013/7/5/4496512/why-nintendos-satoru-iwata-refuses-to-lay-off-staff #layoff
Ceo with real balls
Inspirational leadership building a legitimate culture. Impressive.
I don’t think they overhired in the last 2 years though, apples to oranges
Disagree. Overhiring or not, FAANG companies still have billions in the bank. They don’t actually have to lay anyone off. Esp given a quarter ago, Google was handing out $50M bonuses to VPs.
And if you were that VP you wouldn’t give a shit about others being laid off. You’re just upset that you’re on the wrong side of the fence. If you really cared, you’d accept as little TC as possible so that others who don’t have enough can have more.
Nintendo ... next layoff.
😂 with ceo taking full responsibility
Japanese execs tend to actually take their responsibility seriously. At least compared to Americans.
people in japan also work 12 hour days regularly
From 2013 riding high on the gravy train. What do they think today?
Yeah I was looking for recent news of layoffs there - at most they’ve laid off a few hundred employees since 2013. An article from 2022 discusses how employees still don’t worry about mass layoffs - it could be delusion but the original sentiment seems to be holding true?
I’ve been at 3 tech companies that have done massive layoffs, so a few hundred sounds low to me, but I understand that could still be a significant % of a workforce.
They had layoffs the year after
This article is from 2013..?
Yup (as noted above). It’s been trending around a few different forums for all the obvious reasons.
I just got excited with the title 😔

Gotta love fiscally responsible CEOs
Japan’s mono culture has developed a significant sense of what respect looks like. Having worked for a Japanese company ‘03-08 I can say “they get it”. American companies have copycat LPs and worthless leadership acronyms because mutual respect is not one of them.
The CEO is not even alive, this is an old article.
