Which is a better company to join as a new grad software developer ? Both are in Boston.
Is this a biased answer?
Microsoft++;
Wouldnât it depend on what youâre looking for in a career? Who am I kidding? Microsoft!
Microsoft sucks but I guess it's at least not Salesforce lol
New grad: Microsoft. in HQ/Redmond. Not sure about Boston. Just don't forget to run away in couple of years and go someplace more interesting or more challenging. Join Salesforce after you go through few startups and start valuing simple things, like WLB or not being burnt out. Salesforce has interesting projects and smart folks but , as fresh grad, you will grow faster if you do something along the lines of - Msft, to learn some structured process and learn how to survive in corporate world. - Startup, to learn urgency, resource planning, and subtle art of giving a fuck. - unicorn, to enjoy almost startup but with money. - and then do your pick, what you want to do/where you feel better.
"subtle art of giving a fuck" ... đ

I will be sound bias here but my thoughts are Salesforce has typical CRM work while Microsoft has challenging problems to work on. Also MSFT looks good on resume.
Salesforce has teams working on distributed systems, machine learning etc. One has better chance getting more interesting chunk of work at Salesforce than at Microsoft. At least this is my experience. Also Salesforce has much lower ratio of arrogant assholes/sq ft of the office space.
Doesn't matter. Join a small team who have their hands full, a ton of shit to deliver, and you like the people.
Dont think Salesforce is just a CRM, which to me is one of the least interesting things in the world. Luckily there's a lot more going on. I've just joined Salesforce several months ago via acquisition. I gotta say, our workflow as a startup has mostly remained unchanged. We're given freedom to continue working on our product, except with the added satisfaction of seeing that product used on a massive scale. Meanwhile they're dealing with some serious challenges in delivering at their scale. Oh and btw, Salesforce stocks are doing great and the outlook looks very good for the next year.
That was my experience after a acquisition by Salesforce...for about a year. At that point, teams started to break up, local managers went away, and cohesion was lost. We were not located anywhere near HQ so we got the added friction of the nearest management being thousands of miles away.
