i see microsoft has two type of principle PMs. How is one different from other? Is coding background needed? Can program manager become product manager? how is pay? Around 500 K ?
U sure? Then who does product scoping, devolpment, product pricing etc? Microsoft has so many great products both in SW and HW. Program managers are just there to ensure overall project is on track and everyone is meeting deliverables
PMs do the former. Engineering teams, including devs and PMs, are generally jointly responsible for the latter. I do not really understand how that could be a full time role at any company.
You are in for a shocker then. Even at google there are Program managers
Title: only "Program" managers at Microsoft Actual role: could range anywhere from product to program to project as defined by Blind and industry. How to find what you are interviewing for: ask the recruiter what the role and responsibilities are. Product marketing is a separate title and role not intersecting with program manager title.
I don’t think I ever saw anyone with a “product manager” title at Microsoft. As far as I know they just call their PMs “program managers”
This
Do they have product directors or program directors?
