I am currently a Senior IT Project Manager and may have an opportunity be IT Program Manager at my non-tech company, Delta Air Lines (Atlanta, hybrid). I really want to be at a tech company as a Program Manager. I dare say I am a dedicated, high performer, but getting into tech has been tough. Been applying a few years (still going), TONS of resume rejections, few rejections at the screening interviews, but still holding on hope for a chance. My experience is not simply just project management. I also have solid experience as functional analyst/product designer. Because of this a recruiter reached out about an opportunity at Lennar as a Product Manager where I would help modernize the customer home buying experience with technology. It will still be non-tech, but compensation would be higher and it is completely remote. 1. Should I stay the Program Manager course and wait for a chance at a tech company? 2. Or switch to a Product Manager even if it is non-tech company for high compensation? Current TC: 140K YOE: 9.5 years Potential Lennar TC: 170K Thank you in advance for any guidance and opinions!
Product management is a grind and super competitive. It's not for everyone. Make sure you know what you're getting into
Product Management will allow you the opportunity to delve deeper into the “product” from various aspects including the tech stack. If you have the passion (grind) in you, explore the relationship between the technology thru to the ultimate UX. Update your personal portfolio with your learnings and bring it into your next interview. Best wishes on your future endeavors! 🤩
