I'm making about 260k TC in AZ and have an offer for 420k TC at a bay area company. Using paycheckcity.com salary calculator, my net pay difference would be ~60k after taxes. If I'm going to pay $2-2.5k more in rent, I am really only making 30k extra and half of it would wipe out because of cost of living differences. The way I look at it is that it is only a 15k hike which doesn't seem worth a lot considering I would also be leaving my solid social circle behind and also leaving a very chill wlb at my current company. Let's just say future growth in TC by living in Bay area is not taken into account. Am I looking at this wrong way? What aspect am I missing in my analysis? TC: 200k, 15-20% bonus target, rsu $760k for 4 year, vest at 25% per year.

Why no one cares about the lives lost in Gaza, Israel and busy in their own lives?
260k in AZ - I wouldn't move. It's a no-contest considering col, infrastructure, traffic, and social life impact. Focus on what you can score where you are instead!

I would not move especially given your solid social circle and great wlb.
Splunk has pretty great WLB but the social circle argument is hard to dismiss. Do you enjoy the work you do now at Amex?
Yes it's very fulfilling to me and I've plenty of opportunities to play around with different tech.
If you are fulfilled why move?
$2.5k rent? Are you going to be sharing a room with 7 strangers in the Tenderloin?
Amex said āmore in rentā. Iām guessing he/she isnāt paying zero now
OPās probably paying 1000-1200. For 3.7K, you can easily rent a 2 br pretty much anywhere in Sbay
Is that kind of pay common for non-director roles (or are you in such a role)? Was thinking of moving to tx but assumed I could never come close to $200k without tons of experience
I'm Staff here equivalent to Director
Staff in the Bay Area is not equivalent to director
āonlyā 30k bump
Nah, not worth it. Iād stay back in Arizona.
What about additional yearly stock refreshers? I assume splunk has them. With those at 200k per year (normal for your numbers), your TC for next four years would be 470, 520, 570, 620. You will have base increases as well. Also if you lose that job in AZ, how easy it would be to find another with similar pay there? In Bay Area itās much easier.
Good point. I hadn't factored that in.
You've never seen a downturn, have you? I moved a long time ago with similar reasoning. One crash is all it takes for a company's principles and values to get tested and often thrown out the window. Who guarantees refreshers and base pay increases?
Which company are u moving for. ? 420k how much part of it is stocks / rsu, because stocks are taxed differently
Seems like OP is considering Splunk
Edited the post with TC details. Company is Splunk As per my knowledge rsu are taxed as regular income whether I sell them or not on the date I receive them.
