I was thinking of planning to move to Bay area since 2019. when i started applying for those Driverless/Robotic car startups in the begining of this year i had a couple of interviews at Waymo and Zoox and didn’t make it through the final rounds of interviews. I never heard back from nuro or Cruise not sure why. Uber ATG had a HR phone screen and then got back to me in April saying Hiring freeze. I am just wondering about the Job market for these Robo Taxi/Delivery Start ups in Bay area, Do you think if this will improve by end of this year? I’m tired of working in East Coast, I want the Cali life. #interview #auto #career
I am in a similar spot like yourself. But for me I have looked at total TC - COL. Depending on whats more important to you. Fun in the sun or actually owning property. Cali is just really expensive so TC needs to be atleast 2.5x if you are in low COL area.
If you have a solid job, keep it for now. Wait out this one unless you want to take a massive risk.
Did lyft Level5 was impacted in the recent restructuring ?
Level 5 was not exempt from layoffs, in case you still needed that info.
How much do you value having the opportunity to own property?
I value having opportunity more than owning property
If you're comfortable with renting a small place indefinitely for your time here, then it can work out well. You'll have the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount from working at many companies here. I don't regret it at all from that perspective. If/when you ever get to a stage where you're thinking about having kids, owning property, living in a decent school district, while keeping your commute down... that's when things start to get tricky. Most people simply don't grasp the cost of living until they come and see it for themselves. It's pretty unreal.
I am also looking forward to make the move to the Bay, do you mind if we talk on DM?
Sure
Thank you, if you don't mind can you DM me? Unfortunately, I ran out of all the DMs.
Despite SIP I got offers from Argo and Nuro for SWE positions and waiting on spg still so I assume the market is OK? Not too sure about hardware.
When you said SPG, are you referring to Apple SPG?
Congrats on offer!
Checkout Nvidia. More stable and you get to build a lot of SDC experience
If I am at your age, single and no kids, I will definitely go for Cali. However, the timing now makes it a bit tricky on both employee and employer. If it is yours, it will be always yours as long as you keep doing it. Anyway, overall, I see nothing to lose by moving to Cali based on your personal situation.
To myself, if the opportunity is right, I will still move. I have aligned with my wife on this. However, relocation is not easy anymore compared to single man with two luggage cases. Seattle may be better option to me. Gun law is another factor. So many things to consider now. LOL
What's your definition of Cali life? I was thinking more SoCal with Tech when I got to the Bay, man was I wrong.
A friend of mine visited from atl and goes “where are all the hot girls driving Ferraris?” “It’s in this suburb called Los Angeles about six hours south”
Where are you living now? What’s your tc and how much do you have saved up? Also, what is your current rental amount? One of the things that ticks me off the most is not that you pay $3,200 for a 1br apartment it’s that said apartment is old and not well maintained.

I wouldn’t move to the Bay Area for Uber. Don’t make the same mistake as a lot of people who are about to get laid off.
Thanks for your feedback on Uber, can you please elaborate on the mistake part? I graduated from college like 2.5 years ago and never worked in the Bay area. So i would like to seek any kind of advice from you on pros and cons of moving to Bay
I’m in the bay and would not recommend either. High expenses of living cost for those in early to mid 20s, unless you’re making at least 80k-100k a year though. But if you’re in New York, then you’re probably used to the cost of living. However, I must say there’s a lot of opportunities out here. I relocated to Bay Area not by choice, but bc the job is situated here. No one can beat the California weather btw.
