For a while I’ve been thinking about going back to school for a masters in computer science because I do not have any academic experience and thought it may help with imposter syndrome. Been working as a software dev for 6 years. I don’t know if it’s worth it to go back to school. Mainly self taught and lucky enough to convince small startup companies to hire me for more web/front end work learning web development online from Udemy, udacity, free code camp. Was able to use online resources like teachyourselfcs.com and OSSU classes while I work to improve my domain knowledge and leveraged the senior devs who where willing to teach me in about every role/company I worked at. Took C+ programming and Discrete Math at a community college, think the quality of education sucked and felt like I wasted money compared to just YouTube tutorials. I feel like I’m at the cusp of team lead in many of my roles after sometime and not to be cocky but I do feel like I’m a good developer. Anyways, always feel like I’m missing something or if more people knew I didn’t posses any academic credentials it would change their view of me in the work place. TC: ~260k or something
I am in the same boat. What have you chosen to do?
Still deciding. Leaning towards not going back to school. Needed some pre reqs for a mscs so decided to take those at a CC. Found them completely useless. I know they are not absolutely need the pre reqs. So I don’t know if I want to spend the time and money. Trying to feel out what others have done.
Bachelors?
I have one in an unrelated field. The tuition cost for a bachelors seems stupid. Oregon state it’s about ~$35k and UIUC MCS online is about $25k where Georgia tech is around $8k
