I'm currently L7 principal engineer at Amazon, and am going through TM process with Google. The recruiter told me it's for L6. Is it a huge step down? I know it's standard for both Google and Amazon to downlevel people when they join, but I wonder if it would be a career mistake to accept downlevel even if the comp is good. L7 PE is a really big deal at Amazon. Is L6 a big deal at Google, or only L7+ is a big deal? Levels.fyi shows some overlap between the Amazon and Google levels, but wondering what it's really like at L6 in Google. TC: $470 YOE: 15
Depends on how long you have been an L7 at Amazon. If more than 3yrs, aim for a Sr.Staff

External L7 hiring is rare. Maybe if you have a strong referral or completely ace the interview, you can ask to get upleveled or just bump TC a fair bit more. I would say give the interview anyway.
L7 at Amazon is bigger deal than L6 at Google, not saying L6 at Google is nothing. Simple way to look at it - There are L7s at Google, but extremely few L8 ICs at Amazon. If you’re under a good L8/L10 at Amazon and you get an offer from Google, likely they’ll match it to retain you if that’s your only concern.
I recently interviewed with Google for L6 and spoke to multiple L6 staff engineers.Talking about the scope of L6, they all said the same thing. Scope will be at team level and to some extent cross team. But as a principal your scope is at org level at Amazon. Definite push for L7 don’t settle for L6
If you care about TC take L6 and enjoy the reduction in scope. If you're trying to keep growing def don't take it

L6 scope at G is lower than L7 at AMZN. There's like 1.5% L7s in all of AMZN the percentage in G for L6 is considerably higher. Scope is multi team wide not org wide
You mean amz L7 is org wise scope? I personally don’t see L7 has that wide scope, usually just multi teams so aligns well
L6 at Google is not a big deal like Amazon PE. I came from high Google L6 to AWS PE. TC: 850k. Google just reached out for L7. L6 is a down level because they know you might be not be paid well at Amazon.
Is it worth for OP to boomerang then? They’re already L7 so getting back in with a nice new 4-year package shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
OP should first try L7 at Google. If it doesn’t happen, try to boomerang to fix the comp. Going to Google L6 will slow their progression though. I’d instead go to a L7/L8 type of role at a company with a lower bar to guarantee growth and sustainable increased comp.
