I am an ICB6 hardware eng with $196k+30% cash bonus + $160k rsu (Tc 416~436 bacause cash bonus can go up to $90k). I’ll have a guaranteed $730k worth of RSU to vest over the next 7 years. Apple recruiter called out of a blue and I passed the interview. Their initial offer was $220+ $60k cash bonus plus $750k RSU to vest in 4 years. It is ICT5. The cash sign on bonus will barely cover the money that I’ll leave on the table by leaving Brcm (mainly the anual bonus). The rest will translate into $440k for the first full year Assuming 15% cash bonus. They are very firm on this numbers. seems like a take it or leave it situation. I was hoping to get a TC of $470 the first full year. The field is new and interesting. yoe: 15+ education: phd location: cupertino. I wonder if I should accept and what to expect from Apple down the road in terms of finantial growth and experience. Any advise is highly appreciated. PS: I realize the recruiter can easily recognize me from the data I provided above. Hi JV :). I really meant what I said in my last email.
Hard pass and tell them to pay more if they want you to jump into an unknown lol
Its really a good position to be in. I would start considering long term goals. If you can see long term growth potential and have good leaders(managers/VP/fellow etc) who understand your potential and can offer you growth at BRCM. I would pass the Apple offer. After a certain level, credibility and connections matter and they can take a while to build.
No I don’t see much room to grow where I am. That was my main reason to put myself through the grueling interviews in the first place. I admit it is good problem to have. Especially in these times. I am thankful whatever happens.
Then give it a shot - Can boomerang back if you didn’t like it. What are the refreshers like at ICT5? Did the recruiter share that.
asic design?
Digital design. More like an architect position. No rtl coding.
Apple offer seems nice given higher base and direct pocket cash. New and interesting field is important! Tech is changing fast and trying new tech keeps you relevant!
All good points. Thanks.
see you at Apple!
I would think clearly as to how much growth you would expect if you were to contunue at Brcm. As in 4 to 5 years from now. Yoe 15+ after Phd or you are including 5 years of phd too ? Congrats
After PhD. But I am changing field from chips used in backend to chips used in consumer products. Thanks.
Did you take the offer ? I’m in similar situation I’m icb6 at Broadcom . Recruiter said my expectation of TC ~510k/yr (182+ 275+ 60i) way out of the range what Apple can offer . Waiting for the numbers from recruiter
why do u want to make a change then? 510k is a lot of money
Want to move away from networking to ML
OP , the apple TV numbers work against u. At brcm, ic6 gets 90% ++ rsu refreshers and wlb is very good. Apple can be a shit hole in terms of wlb and commute.
Stocks & prestige
But Brcm is equally good in terms of rsu grants if not better. Also I have a good wlb. Main reason for considering the move was that I was bored with my current work.
New & interesting work is already worth the move imo. I’d do it 😊
