Amazon vs Bloomberg

I'm posting from my friend's account so ignore Oracle. I have two offers, Amazon SDE 1, Seattle and Bloomberg New Grad New York. Amazon comp: Base - 130k, sign-on - 43/31, 50 RSUs. I don't have the full details of the Bloomberg compensation yet but they've told me base - 145k, sign-on - 45 and another bonus either of 20% of base or 20k for first year which changes every year (this last part I'm not quite clear about yet). YOE: 0 I interned at Amazon last summer and I had a horrible experience with a completely unsupportive mentor and didn't get a return offer and didn't want to go back at any cost. The posts I've read on Blind about Amazon's pip culture, office politics and horrible WLB have further reinforced my view. However, the amount I learned in those 3 months is unparalleled. I'm afraid if I'll possibly stunt my career growth if I pick Bloomberg, again because of posts I've read about Bloomberg's legacy stack and not having the same impact on my career in tech as Amazon would. At the same time, I don't want to go through what I went through last summer at all. Nothing is worth that. So all the help and advice I can get is appreciated.

You’re too young to worry about having fun. Go learn as much as you can and develop an unparalleled (and unhealthy) work ethic that will give you the experience and mentality that makes all other jobs feel like a breeze (bc they are)

Datadog dogget Jul 12, 2020

?? You are young, have fun. Forcing an unhealthy work ethic does not unlock some next level productivity. Just exhaustion and burn out

Amazon ando Jul 12, 2020

What did you expect? m2c is from Amazon.

Amazon evolveordi Jul 12, 2020

Amazon first, then if you decide that the trial by fire lifestyle and a potentially horrible manager is too much, look elsewhere.

I have a fear I'll be piped and will lose my OPT because of the difficulty of finding something in this COVID situation

Amazon evolveordi Jul 12, 2020

You could consider a PIP that early in your career as a scar. So when you’re a middle or senior level SWE, you’ll know how to cope while under PIP, understand how you were PIP’d in the first place, or start looking elsewhere. Getting PIP’d as a junior SWE is much less consequential.

Tf is that amazon offer? That’s much higher than return intern offers that I’ve seeen previously

Oracle tk21072 OP Jul 12, 2020

It's not a return offer.

Bloomberg WhiskyNeat Jul 12, 2020

Amazon but quit fast if you hate it there. You can always interview again for BB

Oracle tk21072 OP Jul 12, 2020

Being from Bloomberg, why Amazon?

Amazon bcoin_jake Jul 16, 2020

Probably because the amazon TC is much better. Those 50 shares right now are worth about $150k and you get none with the Bloomberg offer. I work at amazon and love it. It’s all team dependent and org dependent like any other company.

Salesforce dun1k Jul 12, 2020

How did you get that offer for Amazon for SDE1?? Wow. I thought return offers are not negotiable.

Oracle tk21072 OP Jul 12, 2020

It wasn't a return offer

Salesforce dun1k Jul 12, 2020

How did you negotiate with Amazon btw? Based on interview performance - or did you have any offer apart from Bloomberg? I had heard that new grad Amazon offers for 0 YoE are even lesser than ones for return interns.

Qualcomm uilll Jul 12, 2020

How did you get such a high sign on from Bloomberg? I heard that they don’t usually give sign on.

Bloomberg 2LandTrump Jul 13, 2020

That's not true.

Bloomberg Dargnayt39 Oct 12, 2020

Everyone I've spoken to across 3 training batches said they all got a sign on bonus.

Oracle stuck_in Jul 12, 2020

how did you get an amazon offer when you did not get a return intern offer, isnt there a period of like an year for reapplying

Oracle tk21072 OP Jul 13, 2020

I think It is 6 months.I Interviewed again after 6 months

BBG, for it's WLB and culture. Regards to learning, I would not agree from anyone from Bloomberg Engg that they had little or no learning. May be they need to start exploring guilds and participate. I have seen many team with all latest and open source only technologies. I notice that everyone, whom I interacted with are humble and approachable. Bbg is my first company after graduation and I don't regret by any means. Pay wise, Amazon leads due to stocks, I notice that bbg base beats or matches the FAANG base market given the experience, bonus is all cash and hence TC is bit low compared to FAANG Your sign-on is so attractive.

Bloomberg soupgo Jul 13, 2020

Note, I have no experience working at Amazon

Bloomberg youtubez Jul 13, 2020

I agree that the culture and people and wlb is good. But teams using latest open source tech? Maybe 1 in 100.

Bloomberg bhilbuoy Jul 13, 2020

Not all teams at Bloomberg have legacy stack, you can find a good fit within Bloomberg. Switching teams within Bloomberg is also pretty easy. I had the same dilemma couple years ago, picking between Amazon and Bloomberg. I don’t regret picking Bloomberg.

Bloomberg lUIE56 Jul 13, 2020

I’d pick Bloomberg, since Bloomberg FSD offers are pretty good. But you’ll probably want to leave after a year or two if you want compensation growth. BBG doesn’t seem to pay people who are growing there. I attribute that to not having a growth structure for engineering.

Amazon bcoin_jake Jul 17, 2020

Looks like he should go to amazon then.
