I'm 26 years old, and just landed a dream SWE role in NY that pays a good amount. I have always dreamed of living in NY, and now that I will be making a good amount of money, I wanted to treat myself to living in a nice single apartment/townhouse for a year. I've been waiting so long for things to align, and it seems like they are! I want to live in either Williamsburg or Brooklyn. However, before knowing that I had the offer the new job, I signed a lease that will start in about a month with roommate I found on Facebook marketplace. At the time of signing the lease with the new roommate, I didn't have the job offer (which I have now signed, so its official), but I was sick and tired of pushing my move date back to move to NY (literally years lol), so I signed something that I thought was decent (I still do think it will be a good time). The place and location is nice, and the roommate seems cool too (video called with him, however, I am considering abandoning the lease, and moving into a single. I have had roommates my entire life, and I feel like it'd be nice to have a single, although I would be okay with have a roommate once more, just because I am used to it and I guess saving more money would be pretty nice (especially in NY). I already signed the lease with the other roommate, paid for the first month, and paid the security deposit to the landlord, which is $3000 total for those together. The lease doesn't start for another month. I think that I could jump ship before it starts, but may have to forfeit the security deposit and/or first months rents, worst case. If hadn't already signed the lease, I would probably get a single. I would be paying at most 5K/month of rent and saving/investing a lot of the remaining money. What do y'all think? Sorry if this is stupid question lol. P.S. The job also gives me 15K moving bonus because I am moving from San Francisco, CA. Damn that TC is crazy. Hedge fund?
get a roommate. you ain’t lived in nyc unless you have a crazy roommate story. its a right of passage. my roommate paid for rent in 5s and 1s.
Williamsburg is in Brooklyn.
Why live with anyone if you don’t have to? I’d abandon the lease. Can get a nice 1 bdrm for 4.5k in Brooklyn (btw, Williamsburg IS in Brooklyn). Check out Streeteasy, if you haven’t. Know that if a place is a co-op, board approval can take a long time (a month or longer). Move-in will generally be first and last month, security deposit, broker’s fee (usually around 1month) and building move-in fee, so just a heads up.
Are you single?
This is so long winded. Can gen z not make any decision for themselves? Literally do whatever you want OP. You are humble bragging your high salary and two great options.
They’re excited… just be happy for them
Completely understand how it can perceived that way. I promise that is not the intent. You are right that being more decisive isn't a bad thinf here, just wanted others to weight in as I wanted to validate my own thoughts with others. All love brother!
This ain’t SF, single studio
I used to think SF was expensive lol.
My comment is less about money and more about lifestyle/dating life
