Is remote work career limiting?

I am thinking about working remotely given I got preapproved. Wondering though if it’s career limiting given the limited way to interact with colleagues and Meta seems very political/relationship driven. #officelife #workplace #culture

It depends...

I wouldn’t want to work at a company that looks at remote work negatively I have buddies who have enforced RTO and have to go to the office 5x a week, only to work remotely from the office bc half their team is either at other offices or has approved WFH. Go WFH. Live your life. You’ve already made it to meta, you’re at the top of the SWE mountain (even if people say otherwise). Get out of whatever toxic VHCOL shithole you’re in, be in a better place for your family/kids, and for yourself as you can live somewhere where you can actually have hobbies and space to exist

I wouldn’t say remote work is looked at negatively. It’s just harder to build relationships, and you might have to work harder to improve visibility of your work. It is definitely possible to be wildly successful WFH when the rest of your team isn’t.

Only caveat from someone who did exactly this: It can be stressful living away from a major tech centre because you don’t have many options when looking for a new job. Live well below your means while you have SV money coming in and maybe try to live within an hour of a B tier tech city. That way you can get yourself set up - buy a house, get it fixed up, good chunk of savings - while you have SV money but you won’t end up broke if you have to take a job locally in the future.

After how many months at Meta you got remote pre approval?

it is very clearly limiting if your head is not buried somewhere dark

If your ambitions are to reach higher levels on the management track, remote is absolutely detrimental. If you are interested in the IC track, it still is detrimental, but if you're good, you can get away with it.

You need to be better than good, you have to be superior.

All of my peers agree WFH was a massive mistake. It created a culture of laziness and entitlement. Hybrid is best.
