Hello Blind Community, Need some advice here. I started my career as a software developer using MS technologies in my early years but eventually moved to data engineering. The big data engineering world was exciting when it was a buzzword, that is what excited me, but I ended up more towards analytics platform and currently do a mix of python scripting, SQL, and data platform infrastructure(K8s/ docker). I lead a team of data engineers. I have seen a few challenges in my career as a data engineer - 1. Being more on the analytics side, it is not respected the same way as swe 2. I am realizing there is more meat(challenges to tackle, more than money) in swe side of data engineering than on the analytics side. 3. Data Engineering roles at companies like AWS/Meta are analytics-focused and pay 30% less than swe. My ultimate career goal is to lead engineering teams as VP of Engineering at a company size 200-500 people in the next 4-5 years. Any suggestions are welcome. Adding more context here. - I have lead teams of 8-12 members and hold a director title now. Blind Tax -TC 235K + unknown paper money
VP of engeneering for a team of how many people? Is it 500 engeneers or a call center of 499 people and "VP of engineering" doing IT support for them?
That escalated quickly, from SWE to VP of engineering? Just like that?
Added some more context.
If you’re already leading a team, maybe you can find a data-oriented startup where you can be Head of something or maybe even VP of Engineering from the outset. Then you can use that to transition to the same role at a larger firm.
What’s the question here? It sounds like you are already a people manager. Network and move up the ranks.
