looking for someone to have an offline discussion on masks. I am not seeing strong rebuttals for certain things and want to understand it. (more people rebut what cdc/health authorities say than the rebuttals to the rebuttals) requirements 0. strongly inclined to believe in its effectiveness and not because someone said but because you tried to understand it 1. keep it logical 2. credentials should not matter (if quoting someone or resources) 3. understands basics of experimentation (good and bad practices) 4. can be apolitical in the discussion 5. come with attitude that it's not necessary to change other persons mind or theirs. it's just an exchange of ideas I am on the not inclined to believe it works category trending to strongly not inclined. I can start a pm. and for funsies let's also do a thread to see where people stand on community masking indoors.
had a vaccine in January and have been wearing mask to protect Individuals on immunosuppressives medications and chronic health conditions because they may not be able to have vaccines even though they want to. Several kids became orphans due to the pandemic. You can do whatever you want if you don’t have dependents and don’t care about others. Our healthcare workers have been working overtime with protective wear. We might be wearing only few hours in a day compared to them. You can volunteer for programs like ‘No one dies alone’ in some hospitals if you are not convinced to wear a mask.
the pristine logic and lack of emotional stuff here is blinding I must say.
Masks work because the particles you emit out of your nostrils and mouth can be blocked by the mask
Lol trolling? Virus particles are way smaller than the weft of your mask. They pass right through
Let’s say you sneeze while wearing a mask and a bunch of snot and phlegm ends up on the inside of the mask. The virus in that matter isn’t going into the air, on surfaces, or on other people
I’m happy to defend the proposition that wearing a mask in a reasonably well-ventilated indoor space (CO2 < 700 ppm) will reduce the chances that you infect someone else with an airborne virus if you have one. I don’t think wearing anything but a well-sealed specialised mask (pm2, N95 etc) does jack shit to prevent the wearer from getting infected. But I also don’t want to get yelled at so I’ll just do as I’m told and wear a damn mask. Feel free to DM if there’s enough daylight between our views for an interesting discussion.
is there a reason the fit is so important on destination side but not on source?
On source you’re just trying to reduce the extent to which you’re breathing/coughing/sneezing on other people. There’s no filtration mechanism. You’re just slowing down diffusion. At destination, you’re filtering. If you can smell it, it’s getting through. You need it to be airtight for the filter to work (just like with cig smoke). It even says as much on the instructions on P2/N95 masks.
I don’t think anyone in here would be comfortable if a surgeon came in to the operating room, maskless and coughing, to begin operating on you. Masks are worn for a reason. Their benefits have been known for many years to protect the wearer and others. At this point, the track record of evidence such as this is so well known, that any argument against masks boils down to willful ignorance or confirmation bias.
do you know why they wear it? google it (hint it's about large droplets not aerosols)
in case you have an open mind give this from pre covid a read https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0141076815583167
When covid first started after they okayed masks the general consensus was it was to protect eachothers from ur droplets so if everyone does it, it will work well. It can help a bit probably from the received end or else why would nurses want PPE.
how did that change when we realized uh-oh it's not large droplet but aerosol based spread?
Most people are only wearing it because of social reasons at this point. i.e. being shunned and labeled anti science otherwise
Looking at the data surgical masks & N-95’s are the most effective. I would wear those. Cloth’s do little to nothing. This is not me being anti-mask but rather wearing more effective masks that work better.
The people on the covid task forces working with local authorities to set mandates is excluding the actual subject matter experts such as their own counties’ court approved respiratory protection, decontamination, hygienist, OSHA certified PPE experts who are the only ones qualified for providing guidance on pathogen protection and disease mitigation strategies.
probably don't like hearing from them
