Hi Blinders, I'm on the East Coast in my early career working doing data engineering and some ML work. I want to shift to CA, maybe in a few years, possibly to pursue a PhD. there as well in ML. I want to eventually buy a home there, 🏡. What's some advice you have on housing on CA? Should I rent forever? What TC is needed for 1M - 2M home ? TC: 83K YOE: 1 YR #mortgage #housing #sanfrancisco
Buying in HCOL isn't usually about it making sense in dollars...it's an emotional decision. Nothing wrong with renting, especially when young. You have way more flexibility to figure out what you need/want as you get older and things change.
Yeah, I was really shocked at prices cause east coast you could buy 3 or 4 houses with that kind of money.
There's cheaper parts of the bay area, it just makes the commute suck a lot. There's also cheap parts of CA.... But a lot of stuff is expensive in the desirable areas because a lot of people in CA havr significant money
have rich parents
my household TC is 1mil and we will never afford a home.
Rent until you hit around 400-500k to afford such a house. First step is moving there.
Yeah, definitely if I get into a PhD. program, maybe I could talk advantage of student housing and work internships year round. Rent is nuts 2k for like small studio.
