TC: 101k EXP: 8 years+ CURRENT TITLE: Senior UX Designer (should be lead, see below) I have 8+ years of experience as a UX designer. 5 of which were at Salesforce and then the last 3 at Cheetah Digital. Currently, my career feels a bit stalled due to a variety of factors where I currently work that aren't totally in anyone's control. So it's not really anyone's fault or the company's fault, just circumstance. I'm a remote employee based out of the Indianapolis area and historically I had just counted west coast companies out because when I looked about 3 years ago they had all become more centralized and less remote-friendly. With COVID this attitude has changed a lot, and I think it's an attitude that will continue to be present or at least remote will become far more acceptable as common rather than an exception. I feel like I have the most to gain in TC by applying and trying to get into a west coast company where salaries are higher. But I do like my work/life balance right now. I'm willing to work more, but right now I'm probably running at 50% most weeks. Which is great with two kids and a wife with health problems. I don't want to fully sacrifice that but I also know I'm being underpaid at this point and I'm seeing former teammates start to bypass me at companies like Salesforce. And I know Salesforce is pretty much the only place around here that's paying more than what I make and also awards healthy bonuses and stock as well. I have deep connections there but the people I know are part of the business that is currently frozen due to COVID. Anyways, I know the above is a lot, but hopefully, someone takes the time to read and give advice on whether pursuing west coast companies is a good long term solution that will allow me to stay remote. I'm fine with pursuing positions in NYC/East Coast/Chicago as well to get the desired salary bump I'm looking for. Thanks! #design #ui/ux #techcareers
How much are you looking to make? Several companies are going at least partially remote, but there are quite a few companies that have always been fully remote.
My current TC is 101k. Given my experience I know I'm worth at least 120k in the general midwest market (Chicago/Indy/Columbus). Although that's still asking at the top of the range around here in general unless I make a big title jump with a smaller company or startup where I become Head of Design, Design Director, etc. With small companies those titles mean nothing, you do all of the same stuff you just have the potential of building/growing a team underneath of you. I've noticed out west and on the east coast as well, that TC can easily get to 130-150 with more potential for bonuses, stocks, equity, etc. Interviewing is the best way to find out, but I would like to find something where I'm making more but can still have a decent work/life balance. The two don't necessarily go hand in hand but I know that's another thing that has improved with COVID with so many people and kids home.
Giving this thread a bump.

Not sure if you found a new gig, but the UX Market in NYC area is on fire. May be worth looking at places like Spotify, Google and Facebook. That skill set is im high demand now.

Sorry, I was tired and forgot to add more details. I also refined my post a bit, certainly too wordy. Any input is greatly appreciated!
