Seems like a lot of folks that post here want to get out. Interested to hear collectively why?
It basically just boils down to pay, they pay about a third of what FANG will, have worse benefits, and the culture is very old school. Promotions are limited based on years of experience which doesn't allow better talent to receive adequate reward. On the other hand, if you're into embedded stuff the work might be interesting?
Except embedded is also getting more popular in silicon valley and their other locations. Like Amazon robots or self driving cars. I agree with everything else you said.
I heard they pay less but also people don’t work hard. Is that true?
See my comment below. But way less pay and they work very hard.
I would say you don't need to work hard to keep your job. Most people work hard though because they want to get it done and look good. Management gets profit sharing.
I’ve worked for Lockheed Martin, which is similar to Northrop Grumman. 1. It pays wayyyy less than top tech. Like, a SWE gets happy passing 100k TC within the first 5 years of their career. Yes, I said TC. And that’s any location. 2. As someone else mentioned, it’s very old school. The tech in general is old. The processes are old. The offices are old. And things move incredibly slow. 3. Years of exp dictated promotions. This meant young talented engineers were held back, while older people promoted even when not qualified. This resulted in huge pay/skill disparities. 4. Engineering mgmt most of the time did not have an engineering background at all. You think FAANG has tough wlb... Amazon has been dream come true in comparison.
^ this is the truth. How do I get out man? I have mechanical eng background... seems like there’s no hope for me
Are you doing mechanical engineering work right now at NG?
Have you seen some of the terrible people on here working there? I'm like 3% kidding.
Terrible in what way?
Just anecdotally some terrible ideologies about humanity. But again, that's anecdote, so it's not to be taken seriously.
