How many real estate do you own
My manager is going to deny my L6 promotion again, and I'm fed up with their excuses. My manager says I haven't delivered enough at L6 level, and I lack 'influence'. This is the third time they've denied promotion. I've got an upcoming interview with a non-fang, and I think I should just leave. WTF should I do...
3rd time rejection.. looks like your manager is an a**
Is this a self initiated promo? I heard Amazon makes you submit your own promo doc or something
It’s not self initiated. You and your manager come up with a timeline, assess gaps in your skills as you write a promo doc together and try to fill in those gaps before you submit the promo for review.
Have you thought about there being some truth to the feedback, and what to learn from it?
Probably not as OP doesnt focus on that part at all, so it's a self fulfilling prophecy
Influence isn’t just telling people what’s important. It’s also how you carry yourself. If there’s anything truth to their feedback and you carry yourself with the attitude in this post, it’s a long ways away. Even if you don’t think you show it, people can tell who is disgruntled
More than half of influence comes from title you already hold as juniors just look up to you. Just being knowledgeable and questioning can steer influence too. I doubt that op is doing something so wrong that they lack influence so much. Leadership simply views them as disposable at this point
Not worth the effort. Your manager does NOT want to promote you.
I did something like this before, rejected twice internally. Got an offer and then they wanted to promote me. Just get an offer and see which situation ends up better.
Then you stayed?
When I left my previous company, while convincing me to stay my manager told me it's hard to justify promo to senior folks unless you have something solid in your pocket (like an offer letter to match with)
Leave with a better offer. You are not the one they want to promote clearly otherwise your manager will fight for your promotion to make you happy rather than saying you are not doing enough.
Seems like you and your manager are not on the same page. First time docs usually get feedback and then one works with the Magee to correct that. Second time promo docs are usually lost only if there are serious issues with performance. By the third time, the promo should have been a formality. Did you not work with your manager to close out the gaps from the first and second time? If yes, the manager should have no excuses now. If you never had that kind of conversation - then it’s an issue you didn’t address
It's your managers job to prep you for promotion, if they aren't doing it then they suck. Leave.
I disagree, I've worked in OP's company before and when you're L5 or above, you drive your own promo and prep for it yourself. You initiate all the talks and get all the feedback. Your manager is just there to add their prespective, and then present the final verson in leadership meetings on your behalf.
In general, the manager’s job is not to prep you, especially when someone is already senior. Some great managers will, without you asking. But we all own our career paths. And so growing professionally means having the humility to say, “I’d like your help understanding ways to improve my influence”, etc.
Just leave
Of course, “just leave”. Cos there’s so many opportunities right now, yeah?
Bro is out of touch. It’s not an option for most. H1b visa or OPT f1 transfer is really difficult and hard to find a sponsor. Job market is hard so we probably can’t even find a LATERAL move at same pay.
