JPMorgan Chase Engineering Titles, Pay, & Culture

JPMorgan Role Info: Loc: ATL (hybrid remote) Title: Automation Cloud Engineer (VP) I’m in the middle of the interview process and so far the process has been going really well. I wanted to get some clarity in regards to pay, work culture and WLB at JPMorgan. Are there multiple pay bands at JPMorgan? What is their highest VP pay band for their Engineering dept? Does JPMorgan give yearly merit increases as well as fixed bonuses? What about sign-on bonuses? I understand VP title doesn’t mean much in JPMorgan, so is it uncommon to ask for a more senior title during interview process? I believe the next level up is Manager. Can a person with manager title directly report to another manager or would they need to report to the ED? Does a manager title automatically mean you will have direct reports? How hard is it to get promoted from VP to Manager? Lots of politics? I hate politics and try to keep far away from it as possible. I’m a project driven individual that loves to take on new challenges and deliver solutions. I also expect to be recognized with equity increases after a high-visibility major project completion. Is this something I can expect at JPMorgan? I heard tech moves really slow at JP and I love working with new tech and integrating it into production. Any comments would be appreciated. Does JPMorgan Engineering encourage employees to attend tech conferences and training seminars? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Me: Loc: ATL (currently 100% WFH) Base: 160 Bonus: 20% WLB: Awesome! Current Role: Sr Automation Engineer YOE: 12+ Pension: Yes 401K: Yes PTO: unlimited (at mgr’s discretion of course) Campus Amenities: Amazing Training Budget: Massive Travel: Only when desired for training or attending conferences.

What’s the motivation to leave?

Motivation for me is to grow more in a leadership capacity with or without direct reports. Of course salary is motivation too, can’t work for less. From what I’m reading JP doesn’t give fixed bonuses which is a bummer. My pension is keeping me locked in my current role since not many other companies offer and my company also stopped offering it a couple years ago to new employees. Being locked like this is not necessarily a bad thing but if I can what I love and earn more then why not?

I don't think there's manager title at jp. After vp its ed.

JPMorgan Chase ezzzzz Dec 6, 2021

You can have reports even at senior assoc, which is below vp on ladder.

JPMorgan Chase ezzzzz Dec 6, 2021

There's no equity at vp level, i think im a junior don't count me on this. But only ed and up get equity. Bonus is not fixed, again at least at my level.

I thought it was: VP - SVP - ED - MD with each one of the titles having many internal levels. I don't think there is an official title of "manager" JPMC is huge organization. They have really good new top leadership, so expect exciting things. But as with any huge org, you will have to find a great team once you are in and be willing to move around. Your first team may or may not be fantastic. Pay attention to what are the high visibility and cloud modernization-related projects

JPMorgan Chase FYUk77 Dec 6, 2021

There’s no SVP

Oh? Interesting. They usually don't jump from VP to ED at other banks, but good to know

JPMorgan Chase —————— Dec 6, 2021

Nope - JPMC pay range is not even close to that. It’s low. I moved from 602 to Amazon L5 pay was nearly 2.2 times more. JPMC pay is horse shit - promotion hikes will be 2%

Snap fdnfc Dec 6, 2021

Asking about the leveling, not the pay.. It also since you mentioned it, can you give more details about the pay diff

JPMorgan Chase —————— Dec 6, 2021

Why in the right mind would you want to move to JPMC - it’s a sinking ship. A lot of top talent is jumping ship because of leaderships stupid policies. With 13 YOE you will get payed way more outside. YOY increments are a joke promotion hikes will be 2-3%. No equity for ppl below ED. So many red tapes - especially around cloud because controls is scared and you will need a SEAL do anything and SEAL’s take an eternity to get approved. The cloud implementation is a mess nobody knows what they are doing and it will take 10 years to get it right. You will lag behind the industry’s by a decade - joining JPMC was a career fuck I deeply regret. ED promotions are a political nightmare.

How long have you been there? Are you in Eng or Ops side of things?

Personal Capital BCdH70 Dec 6, 2021

From what i heard and read, jpmc compensation are low compare to other companies, their benefits are not great. No 401k matching in the first year and requires 3 year vesting, capitalist health benefits, higher premiums /deductible based on salary.

didn't believe the 🥜tc until i declined an offer from them today. Accepted verbal offer for 210k tc, then hr say it could only offer 175k, accepted that and later was told it was now 130k. because the team consisted of only 602 band and max was 130k and they wouldn't push me for a higher band because vp required 10+ yoe and i had 8

JPMorgan Chase —————— Dec 7, 2021

Lol 😂 sounds like JPMC

JPMorgan Chase TKPA62 Dec 7, 2021

Crazy. Basically they may have hired internal folks or they have no intention to fill this position

JPMorgan Chase dimonjamie Dec 11, 2021

Others have said this previously but you’re very likely NOT going to get big TC bumps outside your initial offer. Expect inflation which is what “most” large orgs do (at least the ones I’ve been in) JPMC’s advantage is the scale of the problems. They’ve the largest bank by a wide margin and are sitting on an absolute gold mine of data. (They have something like 20% of the US Credit card market) some of the projects they’re working on brings this data to life and may change the way the bank does business. On the other hand, size and scale of this org means red tape. We’re working on some projects that it’s taking a year+ to get attention and approval of teams. It’s a nightmare in many cases. If you like to move fast and break things, this won’t be the place for you. It’s slow moving. Truthfully, looking at your current TC with pension, you’d be better off staying. While JPM has a pension, it takes 7 years to get into it (come to think, the 401k is 3 year vest. They know turnover is real high and the vest is like a bonus for sticking around for 3 years) Happy to talk via DM or phone.

Viax65 OP Dec 12, 2021

Is it possible to negotiate vest time for 401K or Pension? Can I negotiate to be vested as soon as I join?

JPMorgan Chase dimonjamie Dec 12, 2021

LOL … no
