Is it just me or is there a lack of mid-level positions open right now? One big thing I noticed is that I was continually slotted and evaluated for senior positions that I was barely qualified for - and rejected, obviously, as I didn't pass the high hiring bar. Companies even told me: - "we want to hire you but we don't have openings (for the right level) right now." - "we barely have any openings right now, so you'll be considered for senior instead since we do have openings there." - "can we check back in {2, 3} months?" - if it was a straight rejection it would be a year for most companies before I could try again. - "can we downlevel you to try to see if it will speed up team matching?" Some companies in particular I saw some of the above from: LinkedIn, Facebook, Zume, Twitter, Google Anyone else seen this happen?
I am seeing that too
why is that?
That's what I'm wondering.
I don't like hiring at the mid level that much. They tend to be more expensive than entry level and not experienced enough to really take the lead on projects. If I had my way I'd only hire entry level for boots on the ground and senior folks for leading projects, and just leave the mid positions open for promotions.
Huh I guess that makes sense 馃 but where else would you level people with like 3-5 years of experience?
How do you define a mid level position? What level are you interviewing for at, say, Google?
That would be L4. Basically, it's the level just below the senior title at that company. In most cases the approximate YOE is 2-5 years.
Yes, I've heard that at least a few of the companies on your list (Google fb) have hiring freezes right now for entry-ish level (L3, L4) positions. You might be running into that issue right now.
