I am offer Sr. data scientist role at best buy but the compensation is very low and the target bonus is very big component. The job is in the data science team- newly created R&D team that helps in modeling/ML solutions for other teams (with pricing, supply chain, product etc.) The pay is too low. Is there any room for negotiation here for salary? Offered me 125k base with 25 targeted % bonus (said they will always provide that 25% though it is termed bonus). The base is even less than my current role. The HM told that they cannot go over that base. They offered the job as remote, else would have never considered it Only reason I am considering it is because I am expecting good learning opportunity in this role (may be wrong if things move very slow at BB and not many good ML projects, I don't know). In my current role, there is very limited scope of modeling/ML and want to move out. How is the job security at best buy (will there be layoffs if things in retail gets bad) and the promotion/growth in the role. Will the 25% bonus always be met. My other option is to go into manufacturing company - Lead DS with TE connectivity (compensation not yet confirmed... could be around 165k-180k). I am worried if I choose TE, I will be stuck in manufacturing/supply chain DS roles in future and cannot move to consumer/product DS roles. Can someone please share their thoughts on TE role - if I choose the Lead DS role with TE connectivity (manufacturing B2B), can I move later to B2C or product companies YoE : 5 #bestbuy #datascience #teconnectivity
Best Buy doesnāt pay well, donāt bother negotiatingā¦ look elsewhere
Thank you for the response. But do you think it is worth to work there for a couple of years and then move with the Ml experience gained. Do you think the ML experience in BB is worth it. the TE connectivity job might offer me atleast 20-30k above BB TC. Only reason for considering BB is it is consumer focused and experience might be more worth than experience at TE. Any idea about the job security at best buy and WLB?
Donāt really know about WLB but Iād guess itād be average. If itās the best you can get right now then the experience will be good for you. But in general once you have the skills youāll have to go elsewhere to increase your TC

Programmers are the smartest people in the world
Just a heads up. From my experience, newly created ML teams tend to have a big analytics component to them and it may be a year before you ramp up to having the infrastructure to be able to truly focus on ML.
Thanks . I was told they are working on transitioning their models to GCP. And they will start intake process (requests from other teams) to provide ML solutions. And there is another Analytics team in place already so assuming that modeling may be the focus (I may be wrong though)
That's a good start, yea. Hope you guys have the proper MLE support so you can focus on modelling and experiments š
