Hi All, I am no longer at amazon. Instead, I am at a mid sized fintech related company (not a startup) I am feeling very bad about my skills. I have only been at my new company ~6 weeks, but I am having a hard time accomplishing tasks. I have to ask for help often, and there isnât often someone available, so I sit there spinning my wheels on something Iâm pretty sure I wonât be able to find out on my own, or scrolling on my phone (đ¤Ž). I want to be good at my job and SWE in general. My big picture goal is to get up to 4 total yoe here and then try to get to a tech company for 150-180k remote. But I donât know if I have the chops for it. I did alright at amazon for a year, but not great. The goal with my boss was three months to doing work independently to a decent extent, and 6 months to being pretty much autonomous. TLDR; blowing off some steam in form of rant. No one in my life is swe so I donât like talking about it to them. TC 105 Yoe 2
Did you get PIP from Amazon or something? Iâm not sure why youâd judge your onboarding so harshly
I was a contractor. Originally was going to interview for full time position, but it coincided with layoffs and budget reduction, so they let the contract expire. I am partly worried that my current company is not on the same level from a tech perspective as most companies represented on Blind. So even when I do learn stuff, it wonât be transferable if I try to jump ship later on. In general, I am a harsh critic of myself and psych myself out. My boss also gave kind of hardo vibes and I hate giving stand up updates of âstill mostly stuck, will reach out for helpâ
You have just 6 weeks in your new company. It's okay to invest in learning and seeking help while you are on boarding. Take it light and use your current job to learn what you are doing. You have 2 years of experience, so you have plenty of time to develop. You know probably some gaps, so keep investing in all your gaps and you will see the benefits of these for a long time âď¸ Good luck đ
