Look folks, Georgia Tech’s Internet Governance Project conducted an EXTENSIVE study of TikTok as a national security threat last year. It covers everything from Bytedance’s extensive corporate structure to the Chinese government’s NIL. If you walk away from that study with the same feeling about TikTok, you’ve already convinced yourself it’s bad and no amount of convincing is going to alter your view. As a USDS engineer, this is information I wish people would actually read rather than the vague nonsense they see from talking heads on CNN who haven’t touched a piece of technology since Fortran was popular and can’t even explain what collaborative filtering is let alone understand the intricacies of a more advanced recommendation system. https://www.internetgovernance.org/wp-content/uploads/TikTok-and-US-national-security-3-1.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1IFUVq4UhZhjzOncZi6KXrBnW70TGVN1eqm_vQWF-iRVX9glsc36oaMoo#page1 TC 380 Yoe 5
Couldn’t agree more. Utter nonsense and misinformation is what Congress is spreading. They don’t have proofs and can’t prove anything so they are using their hacking power. That’s it. For them, it is just control. They will just say tik tac toe, we win. How did they win? They didn’t even create anything, they didn’t do separation of US data centers. They just want to have a ban on things they can’t control. Utter useless people in Congress.
Legislation gives power to ban any app or site controlled by foreign adversaries. It’s not just TikTok, it’s a new legal censorship hammer that countries need when they plan to go to war. Probably a big one. It’s just way more direct than Canada’s C11.
There’s a saying in China that goes like this. Tiktok comes on, you wasted everything on your kids. Pretty much true with kids doing dumb things that get them killed or stupid dance moves
I wouldn’t know. I’m from Texas.
I don’t see a problem banning it. We have reels
Ok, who funded the study?
Chyna
This is less about data and right/wrong, than it is about control and dominance. They have every right to make the moves that hurt China.
But that’s just the thing, they can’t just do a thing because it “might or could be bad” honestly if it was a blatant mouthpiece for China it likely couldn’t be banned on first amendment grounds. That’s been upheld multiple times in court. Americans have the right to receive propaganda if they want. RT still runs here in the US.
Rt was banned off YouTube tho
This isn’t about hurting china and more about being able to censure and control information. This is only being shown light now because TikTok is the only platform not censuring posts against Israel. IG is ran by an Israeli lol.
I simply don’t like the idea that government tells you what to use and what not to use, you make the choice for yourself, period. The US ain’t Communist China. Today they ban TikTok, they will ban your reels tomorrow for whatever reason they can find
this is usually just a principled argument that is "we have to keep our rights, just in case the government does it in the future to screw us over" but in this case they're really just trying to screw us over, it's no longer a hypothetical
Read the legislation: https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7521/text
Bro I know what it says. It’s a ban. Use your brain power to see the implications and end state
Hey retard - I wasn’t talking to you. I was posting the legislation for general awareness. It’s always good to read the fine print so we don’t end up with another Patriot Act. That should supersede anyone’s personal feelings towards Tik Tok.
US has never played fair and why does it have to play fair if China and other countries have never played fair?? China banned Google, FB, Twitter first of all. Never followed the Intellectual Property law seriously. Just suck it up and leetcode again
It’s less about the data issue than it is about giving china the ability to influence the minds of American youth.
Did you read it?
I did. Assuming market forces influence the algorithm the elites got a problem because market forces resulted in the youth being against Israel. Assuming China influences the algorithm they have a problem for the same reason.
