I was rejected by DoorDash for a Sr. DS role after on-site and of course got 0 feedback and not even a courtesy phone call, just an email “sorry not moving forward.” I got offers from Instacart and Amazon, and I’m not posting here for sympathy or whatever, but I really wanted to go to DoorDash so it definitely stings a little. I’m curious to get opinions on what others think may have happened. Here is the timeline: I do recruiter phone screen days before onsites at Amazon and IC so I asked if it would be possible to interview on accelerated timeline and recruiter said yes no problem. 2 days later I have tech screen and pass. I scheduled on-site for the following Friday. On-site (on a Friday) went pretty well overall and I just got news that day of offers from other 2 companies - feeling pretty good. The next Monday I informed recruiters that I have 2 offers, no deadlines, but I want to let them know so they can factor that into their timeline if appropriate. They just say they’ll have an update on Wednesday. On Wednesday they call me very end of day to say “it was mostly positive” and they want me to have one more 30m call with hiring manager. Recruiter mentions getting my references ready and she can’t guarantee I’ll get an offer but she likes my chances. That Friday I have the 30m HM call and he asks 2 tell me a time questions about my usage of certain analytical tools/techniques (sql/python/causal inference). I have pretty strong answers and HM spends a long time pitching the role and company to me. I tel him at the very end about my rushed timeline and he says he needs 2 references and can even call them over the weekend if that’s not too forward. After the call, end of the day Friday, I email him and recruiter 2 references to unblock them if moving forward. Next monday, I wait til end of day and ask for update… no response. Tuesday i wait… no response. IC has deadline on exploding offer and I ask for extension which they reluctantly give. Wednesday my anxiety is high needing an answer before my Thursday deadline and I email both the recruiter and HM explaining my urgency, expressing my interest in choosing them over others, and trying to stay humble and respectful. I was nervous about reaching out AGAIN hoping they don’t perceive it as pushy, needy, or annoying. I clicked send. Wednesday goes on… NO RESPONSE. Thursday rolls around and in my mind DoorDash is dead and I’m giving up. Then I notice one of their Directors not on my loop views my LinkedIn, and another anonymous PM does as well. OK cool, something is happening. Late that afternoon, recruiter calls and says no decision yet, team is at an offsite doing HC planning, but they’ll have an answer tomorrow. Ok.. Next day, Friday, 2 weeks since on-site, recruiter emails me form email with no info just a rejection. I reply saying thanks and asking to clarify if I can interview other roles, no response of course. :) So my question is what happened? Did I obviously not meet the bar? Was it a close call and maybe they chose another candidate? Did they lose the HC and just send me a blanket rejection? Did I annoy them to death and set off any red flags? Is this post way too long? Well, you didn't handle it well. You don't pressure one company with outstanding offers if you really want to work there. If I were a manager I would not play to compete. I would be like good luck. That's what happened. If they ask you if you have other offers, you tell them I have 2 offers but I am really interested in doordash. That tells them you are highly desirable and its sexy but you don't threaten them with deadlines. Your exploding offers are your problems, not their. Hiring manager already knew you had other offers, you didn't need to bring it up again.
Don’t beat yourself up about it or overthink it Sounds like you were super transparent about timelines and competing offers and DD was pretty shitty to ghost you knowing your situation you dodged a bullet. If the HM would treat a candidate like this, with zero empathy or appreciation of their situation, just imagine what they’d be like as an actual manager DD has a shit reputation as an employer, same tier as Amazon
I worked at Amazon before and loved it 😂. So yeah I wouldn’t be turned off by that. Also really liked all the people I met with during the interview. Recruiter is only person that bothered me. Just totally apathetic and mostly unresponsive. Could be they were just delaying out of necessity though
Instacart role is DS, Analytics ?
Yes
Isn’t that role still being advertised ?
Either lost HC or hired another candidate. It's possible someone had an offer already while you were in process and they accepted.
They would have someone who did a little better and accepted the offer?
If that’s the case wouldn’t they try to find another team or open req for me?
Not necessarily You were matched to this team If they found someone better and they accepted, they'll decline for you Dd gives strong offers so I doubt they had issues in matching other offers without even knowing their numbers
Considering the fact you had multiple offers - I think it's completely fine to mail to get clarity. You probably were borderline candidate and they managed to close a better one if I would have to guess. Just brush it off and move forward friend.
I doubt. They didn't want to compete with other offers. It's also possible that they had another candidate who was borderline acceptable and instead of running after the one who had 2 competing offers , they went with borderline acceptable
I doubt it. Doesn’t look like would have had problem competing with the other offers for senior ds (meta level not mentioned , Amazon level is mid level not senior.)
The answer is almost always you failed the interview or they found a better candidate Heard DoorDash DS is toxic and awful anyway
Which team was this for?
Not comfortable saying. If you want to DM I can share
Add another poll option. Doordash probably entering a hiring freeze.
Unfortunately can’t edit poll. This is possible, though I still see reqs open online
Dunno I just got asked to do a take home (past first round) from DoorDash
