Background: Currently searching for a new swe position, have been on the hunt since November 2023 and recently got my first offer. 1.5 YOE Current position: Working at a very large global scale company doing development of internal web apps. I work in the office but have the flexibility to wfh. My interest in the domain of work here is 3/10. My job responsibilities also include doing random business administrative tasks like tracking savings and doing bullshit in Excel. It's about a 70/30 split between SWE and business tasks. New offer: Offer is at a software consulting company. I would be placed on a team that works with a long-term client of thiers. This would be fully remote. My interest in the domain of the work here is about 5/10. Ultimately I would like a proper SWE job at a proper software/tech company. Ideals would be Stripe, Shopify, Plaid, etc, fintech startup, or something in the e-commerce space. While the new offer is an improvement over my current situation, I would probably continue to search even if I took the new gig. TC bump isn't too significant. WLB at both companies is good. I prefer in-office work but it's not a deal breaker. I'm not convinced it is worth it to switch. Will it look bad on my applications if I just started a new job and am already looking again? Does it look bad if I work at the consulting company for only a couple months? With current job market should I just chill for 6 months and try again later this year? TC: 97K YOE: 1.5 #swe #engineering #software #offer
My advice is to never go to a consulting company.... Just my 2 cents.. They will also have legal documents disallowing you from working for the client for a period of time etc... Wait it out and land the job you want and move...
Imo lots of people underestimate the difficulty of job searching while onboarding to a new company. You won't be able to coast at the new job because there's lots of new stuff to learn, and you also can't phone it in there and risk getting fired, because what if your job search never turns up anything else? But then you'll have less time and energy for job searching, interview prep, interviewing, all of it. I'd stick with the current job until you get an offer that you'd stop job searching for.
