I used to be considered a liberal, now I am leaning conservative. What happend?
New grad offer 80k base + 10% projected bonus + 7500 relocation. Edges 6 figures TC. I’m 6 months out from graduating and still technically have time to find a job but do really like this one. It’s a training program and includes some travel, mentorship, etc. The engineers seem great and work culture seems good, not cushy. R&D for small cap company, leading tech in the energy field. Physics BS degree from top school, couple years of relevant research experience, no internships. They said the offer is not up for negotiation since it would be with a cohort of other new grads (which is understandable?)
I’ll add I currently live in a city that’s more expensive than San Jose 😅
I’ll also add that I need to move there to find love
It’s the best you’re gonna get in the semiconductor industry with a BS for now Everyone saying you can’t afford SJ on that salary is out of touch. Sure you can’t go on multiple international vacations a year, but it’s far from poverty even in an expensive city Your biggest problem is dating, the ratio of men to women is 2.7:1 in the Bay Area and you’re competing against SWE boys
⭐⭐⭐
With this salary, you won't be able to live in San Jose and will likely have to live in a lower cost area with roommates.
Already talking to potential roommates 😵💫
Honestly, best of luck. I hope it gives you the experience you need to move onto better things.
This would be difficult in San Jose, but doable as long as you get some roommates. 18 month training program, stay 2 years and start interviewing. Long enough to get some work experience without the training wheels on. I'd recommend stay for 3 years if you can to get the promotion, then your sign on and TC will be better at the next place. As E1 my sign on was 10k cash and maybe like 20k stocks? E4 I landed 50k cash and 80 in stocks.
It's a good offer for some just graduating with a bachelor's degree.. You won't get an engineering role in Intel or tsmc with that... More like a technician role.i would take this role, you will grow a lot
I don’t think you’d be able to qualify for an apartment with $88k to be honest. Most places require 3x gross income per month to qualify so that places you at $2400 to be generous. Not sure if that’s possible unless you live in the projects or some low income neighborhood
roommates
average offer, all considering. long career ahead of u with physics background. lots of opportunities in all of the semi companies including apple. take it and learn for a few years.
Can I ask what could be best fit at Apple with my background? I’ve talked to an RF engineer there but that’s the extent of it
too much to write and u r still so new and uninformed so itll take u years to learn the differences anyway
Not tenable
Process engineering roles pay poorly and tend to have awful work life balance. I suggest pursuing alternative career paths.
What would you recommend with a Physics background?
Physics is a broad field. And it is also up to you whether you want to pursue a master degree to pivot into tech or something that pays better.
This is very little money for San Jose. I think your best bet is to take this job and then look for a semiconductor process engineer job in Arizona , Oregon etc. Those will pay 150 in a much lower cost locale, and you will be a good candidate after having done process engineering already. Good luck
This is good advice, thank you! I interviewed for TSMC’s new plant in Arizona and it was the most horrendous experience I think you could have. How long of a tenure would you recommend I hold before hopping to a new place? (18 month trainee program)
My suggestion would be to go through the first year and then start interviewing. Intel might be an easier interview because they don’t work you to death like TSMC. Intel also has a fab in New Mexico. Plus you can also try equipment manufactures such as Lam, Amat and KLA. KLA has moved a lot of its operations to Michigan because they didn’t want to compete with tech in Bay Area, so again it’s a low col area.
