Just got an offer from Amazon for SDE II and it’s a pretty big comp jump from what I have now, around 45-50% more. I’m not sure if it’s the right move for me right now though. At Capital One I have: - great team - good WLB, enough such that I can work on a side hustle/startup idea I’ve been toying with for a while - will be getting promoted to senior eng at the end of the year (overall seems like I’m on the fast track to management which is what I want. Plus thinking about moving to a later stage startup/smaller company to have more impact and a higher level jump would be nice) - possibility to move to PM if I want due to my network - I don’t want to stay a coder/engineering IC for long, thus the drive to get to either EM or PM At Amazon the main things I can think of that make it worth it is much higher comp and name recognition for jumping between companies later on. I’m worried about the long work hours, meat grinder and pip culture, and that upward career growth is going to be much harder and that my (vertical) career growth could be set back. I’d rather make a less money now for a little bit and make more in the long term than just jump now for some money. Plus I’ve heard that you don’t really learn that much new stuff there, just lots of internal tooling. Also a little cautious about job hopping in this type of market. Think I should just wait a little bit and have some patience or make the leap? Edit: Offer is 240k
Capital one to Amazon is a huge diff in culture. Your may be in for culture shock tbh.
Tc or gtfo
You answered your own question when you said "I'd rather make less money now for a little bit and make more in the long term than jump now for some money". Sounds like you have a lot of opportunity in your current role. Don't take your Work/Life balance for granted. You'd be jumping off a ship of security, comfort and granted track of promotion for a lot of unknown into an environment that is known to be difficult and cut throat
Is capital one hiring and can you refer me?
Amazon name will only last you 1-2 jumps. You’ll be back to the same problem
Can't help you without current TC
I was in almost exactly the same situation with a similar offer but it was a 90% increase for me. I took it. It’d be like if I were to have 2 of my jobs lol I’m surely not going to be working 90% more hours than I do now. Haven’t started yet. Hope I don’t regret it. Best of luck with your decision!
You enter the world with nothing, you leave the world with nothing, take risk
You'll learn valuable things at Amazon that you can't learn at your current place
Like what? Or are you assuming that cause of the brand?
like backstabbing, being toxic and much more
Add the TC else no one cares about your post. Don’t fucking vote
What the heck is wrong with you
Nothing wrong with me this is not a mental health post. This is about choosing offers so gotta see the numbers
