My manager recently moved to America from India and is very religious Hindu. Is it offensive if we go out on team lunch and I order a beef burger? Will it he detrimental to our relationship / offend them? We were all ordering and all my coworkers (also under the same manager) ordered beyond meat burgers and I was the only one who ordered the beef one and now constantly thinking if it was offensive. I’m from a Muslim family but not religious and grew up in USA. TC 125k base 12% bonus MCOL
No one cares… But good on you for asking
Everyone can hear me say my order…
🤨
I am sure he won’t give a flying F to what you order.
Hi manager
Don't be pressured into changing your diet, that's a beta move. If you go out with vegans, also order the beef burger and make pleasant sounds while eating
Have run into a similar issue before. I have an Indian coworker who does not eat meat and seems to be uncomfortable when someone is eating meat at the table. I avoid eating meat when he is at lunch to not make him uncomfortable. He is a 10/10 team player and a total chad so I don’t mind. Also I know Hindus don’t eat beef. Do they not eat meat also? Heard someone say it’s a religious thing for certain Hindus? Just curious.
Yeah my manager might be like your Indian coworker. Amex has a ton of people like this. I haven’t seen this at any other company I worked for.
There are Hindus that don't eat beef, Hindus that are totally vegetarian, and Hindus that do eat beef, and Hindus that don't eat pork either but that's not for religious reasons.
It's fine. No one cares. Plus it's professional setting. And you acted in your interest.
Be sure to mention you’re not religious or you could be discriminated against
I have a vegan friend who doesn’t give a shit what anyone else at the table eats, and he is vegan by choice not religion. Had a coworker who did not eat meat per religious beliefs and he also didn’t care what we ate and would say things smelled good but he just didn’t need to eat it. I think a huge Fred flintstone steak is slightly more risky than a burger which barely resembles meat.
I'm a Hindu, I eat meat.
Do some Hindu avoid meat altogether for religious reasons? I understand most Hindus don’t eat beef.
It's too complex to explain. As a thumb rule, you can say that the upper caste Hindus don't eat non veg. These days, rebellious upper caste will have meat, and the lower caste who wants to subscribe to the no meat rule will claim themselves as vegetarian (seeking acceptance). You don't need to bother.

Where can I get best chai (tea) in Bay Area?
Yes, it is fine. You are free to do as you wish. If your manager finds this uncomfortable, he/she can choose to be in environment that they feel comfortable.

This is extreme, OP is at-least being respectful and considerate which is correct human behavior
