How important are soft skills in tech interviews?
I'm a new grad and got a Microsoft offer: Azure team Atlanta Base : 100k ~ Stock : 120k Bonus : 20k I'm also in an interview process with Bloomberg (final interview date is outside my microsoft offer acceptance date) In terms of real world experience, I have no idea what to expect, what to value, what to prioritize. (Money? Family/relationships? Enjoying my mid 20's?) I'm from NYC area with all my friends/family. College friends/girlfriend 3 hour drive from NYC. I understand Microsoft should already be good enough since Bloomberg is not a real offer yet, but it's forcing me to think about my life after college. I'd be going into Atlanta knowing no one and as an Asian minority. Life seniors on blind, can you guys help me understand what I need to prioritize? Should I be thinking about maxing my TC and then thinking about where to settle in my 30's? Some things I'm keeping in mind are, hopeful internal transfer to different Microsoft office after a while. Growth potential is probably better at Microsoft Azure team. Bloomberg might be as equally good. Internal transfer may not happen and I may be stuck in Atlanta. Reneging is not an option, as I don't believe its worth it. #engineering #software #life #newgrad
I would say go for MS if you didn’t have a partner, but since you do, my input would be to stay and try for BB. Long distance is really hard, and things can happen a lot more easily if you’re farther apart that would lead to a breakup. It sounds cheesy, but if you found a partner who you really love, then it might not be worth chasing MS. Career opportunities will come.
Depends how committed you are to each other, and if gf can move south eventually
This poll makes no sense till you get an offer from Bloomberg! Frankly speaking if you do very well in interviews, Bloomberg can go as high as 175k tc with another 30-50k sign-on. So, without the offer it literally makes no sense to contemplate and worry about a situation which may never occur!
i was working with the hypothetical that money would be similar. But according to col calculators, my tc in atlanta translates to $200k~ in nyc. Does this change anything? Interested in reading everyones insights. Also, really appreciate all of the opinions. They are all reaffirming my opinions and providing new insights into the equation.
I would again suggest the same thing. First wait for the Bloomberg offer, then create a poll!
Take MS offer, if you get a bloomberg offer post an update here. Since u r a new grad it’s not that much to decline the offer after accepting.
Unless Microsoft is your dream company and you don't want to ruin your chances at all with recruiting for them in the future, I would just accept Microsoft and turn them down later if you decide to go with Bloomberg
Let the recruiter know you have another offer and need to make a decision. Maybe they can move your interview date
Will Microsoft let you WFH in NYC? You should probably take Microsoft offer regardless. After one year+, you can reassess if you are happy and if not start applying to NYC companies with big tech on your resume. Best of luck.
