I’ve never eaten at a Michelin Star restaurant or a similar restaurant that has a chef fixed menu that looks fancy with spoon sized portions, plates decorated with dips and glazes and edible flowers and food art. My question for those who have eaten at such places - is the food enough to satisfy your hunger? Or is the expectation that we appreciate the gastronomical wonders and then grab a burger on the drive back home 🤔 I’m thinking of taking spouse to such a restaurant for our upcoming anniversary and while I’m at a place in life where I can afford the ultra expensive meal, I want to make sure I know what I’m getting into 😅 Picture courtesy internet search.
Yes it is satisfying quantity, usually one or two later courses are fairly substantial. The whole point is not to fill you up too early. Honestly my favorite thing about nice michelin restaurants is the quality of service. The staff really want to do a great job and are the best. Feels like everything just “works”
I agree, and although I’m saying this without ever having dined at one, I do want to treat the spouse to a ‘movie like’ dining experience
The service is highly attentive but discreet. They are keeping close track of you but remaining invisible for the most part, trying to be as uninvasive as possible
Lol this is where rich and I act like rich people go. I appreciate food but not fancy food.
I love food - homemade, street food, chain restaurants, specialty cuisines. Need to check off the gold star dining experience now 🤩
Love this, op! My only note is that you shouldn’t take your first michelin experience as typical. It may take a few tries before you find a place you love
yeah it’s enough. I go to a Michelin Star restaurant every once in a while
It's the opposite problem. A full tasting menu at 2/3 stars can be too much food. Have a light lunch or you wont feel well after
Thanks for the heads up
Yes. Last time I visited one we were so full that most of us didn't finish the food
Good to know, I might have to fast in anticipation
Yes I go to Michelin star places quite frequently. There’s a difference between 1 and 3 star. 1 star is pretty casual, normally can just be a regular restaurants that’s good. 3 star is the fancy places with degustation menus. Yes you will be very full. Portions are small because there’s usually 10+ dishes. You will be fine unless you are one of those guys that have to eat 2-3 Big Macs every meal. Being mostly French or french fusion, butter use is heavy so yes you will be full.
That’s a good point about reservations. I’m waiting for French Laundry wait list to open up
There’s no waitlist for French laundry anymore. It’s all reserved on Tock. You just spam click the reservation button the second reservation opens up. Actually you might need to use a bot.
Everything is relative. The course is designed to satiate an average person so if you are a 200lb dude who lifts and consumes 4000cal per day - it will leave you somewhat hungry. But generally you are fine.
Fortunately not 200lb and (un)fortunately don’t lift regularly any more. So sounds like I’ll be fine!
You’ll get full after the tasting menu. I got bad diarrhea afterwards though.
Hm, that’s the second case of an upset stomach reported on this post.
It depends on which Michelin restaurant. Sometimes after dinner I leave and go get another bite because the portions were meant to appreciate not satisfy hunger.
From one of the posts above it sounds like the portions put together are good enough for anyone under 200lb and who doesn’t lift regularly. I might just pack a sandwich for a mid drive snack back home 👀
There is no chance you’ll leave French laundry hungry
I went to one once - wasn’t able to sleep for the whole night - spent time sitting on the toilet. I guess bacon and mussels don’t play well together. Get prepped for that unless you’re true conissiour
If you’re simple person from simple origins skip that part.
I’ll keep that in mind 😅
