What’s the current sentiment around GitLab / working for GitLab in 2021? Considering making the jump from Facebook to get more experience in a smaller company that is growing quickly.
In terms of a product I like them more than github. Afaik they're very transparent on their salary ranges. They have a calculator on their website that tells you salary based on your area and COL. From what I hear they're fully remote, so you'd have to be ok with that too. My knowledge is very limited, but if you really want a fast paced start-up environment, I am not sure Gitlab is the best place. Again, info is very limited, but I remember reading it was more of a chill and laid back place. Hopefully someone with better insight will confirm or deny.
LOL... prepare for a 60%+ TC cut coming from FB.
Downgrade from Facebook.
What if the comp and level is better?
I feel like it would be difficult for them to give you higher compensation without upleveling you in a way that would significantly expand your expected scope. If you have the ambition to take that on, then it might work out. It might be difficult to convince GilLab of this, but probably depends on your YOE.
I'm at Gitlab, seems like common sentiment is bad comp as SWE but pretty decent otherwise. I got a 30% salary boost moving to Gitlab personally, and recently got more stock options from new refresh program, so comps getting better, especially for "key talent". That said I was eager for Title bump and more responsibility also to advance career so made sense for me. If you don't mind not seeing coworkers and can get a good manager, you will have the best work-life-balance ever though because you can plough through all your work async and then keep all that free time to do whatever If woke culture triggers you highly recommend against GitLab though. (I hate it but I play along because my WLB is unmatched)
Woke culture how?
Like not supposed to say certain words, quota on %female senior managers, quota % of diverse hires and hires from low cost of living areas
_Very_ remote friendly (was fully remote back when Corona was still a beer), well-funded as well. TC might be on the lower end tho, especially coming from Facebook
