Hi, I recently graduated from UW with my masters in computational linguistics. Before that, I got my undergraduate degree in the same field from USC (and before that, I was a 9th grade high school dropout who went to CC seemingly forever). But anyway, I've been having a really tough time landing a job. I did have one interview shortly after grad school. It was a with a conversation analysis startup and the base pay was 125K-250K. They're still pretty new, so no stock options and such, but I would have been very happy with 125K. I got cut after a third round interview. I've been applying like crazy to jobs that LinkedIn recommends, but I get autorejected quite fast. ibotta, one day rejection. Best Buy, 7 hour rejection. I've noticed that a lot of comp ling people I've found on LinkedIn seem to start with contract work at places like Facebook/Meta and Google. I've seen stuff like Google via Adecco and Facebook via ProUnlimited (now Magnit). Another I saw, (I think Russell Tobin?), had a form to work with a recruiter, but I sent my info in and never heard back. Where might I be able to find some of these positions? I don't mind it being temporary. I just need to build experience because my current job has nothing to do with my educational background. I'm completely open to roles not necessarily in my field as well. After my undergraduate degree, I had several interviews for IT/systems analyst positions with the State and City, but I was terrible at interviews. The fact that I lasted three rounds with the startup makes me think I've gotten better though. Any ideas/leads would be very much appreciated. #meta #amazon #google #recruiting #hiring #jobopening
Tip: use a burner email and a Google Voice number when dealing with staffing agencies. Some of these agencies sell your info and will lead to you getting bothered and harassed years down the line for jobs you’re not interested in

I believe these temp contracts could be found on the company site under temporary contract category or something similar. Don’t get discouraged, just keep applying, connecting with people and asking for referrals. The job market is quite tough right now with all the layoffs, so many companies aren’t even hiring so I think it would be better to focus on startups and keep practicing interview skills. Best of luck!
I asked for a referral consideration the other day and then a few hours later, I was rejected from the job I had applied to, haha. Maybe it was a coincidence since I had applied a few days before asking for referral consideration, but the timing was sure discouraging. I apply to pretty much anything LinkedIn recommends to me.
