I started to realize that I was never the manager’s favorite. It’s just that the favorites get the promotions, visible projects, and accolades. Curious how common it is and how folks who were not favorites still progressed
FWIW ive been the Managers favorite and also not been one. Managers favorite is usually the best/productive employee who is great to get along with and not necessarily the best a$$kisser. Esp for promotions to management, being a person who is well liked by cross team managers is crucial. Its a big part of the job.
Been managers favorite and progressed. I believe it is due to working very smart and delivering on time. Initially no high profile projects, but after delivery of a couple of med projects and recommendations to business about new SOTA models with prototype by just taking the initiative , everything changed and was put in high impact projects going forward
This is exactly why job hopping should be normalized and any norms of socialization eliminated at work. I shouldn’t have to suck up to my boss to get promoted, nor should any sort of -tism play a part in my career. Now that you’ve learned about this, start looking for a better job and always treat work as if it’s expendable. TC: 62K
You don't need to suck anything to be the favorite if you are good at your job though
This is my first time not being my manager’s favorite and I feel like I’m living in the shadow of my other coworker low key
Just get through the day and interview for your promotions.
Worst is being managers favorite but not progressing. I found those kinda of managers are pretty useless or spineless
I was the favorite and my career progressed significantly compared to other colleagues that joined the same time as me. My advice? Just play the politics and be selfish until you have to retire. You don’t owe any favors to anyone at work.
I see what you mean but “be selfish” could easily get taken out of context. I’d rephrase it to “ruthlessly prioritize whatever your Manager cares about and gets judged on”. This will greatly benefit one’s career.
Good point, know your audience and play the politics.
