Hello everyone I’m currently a Business Analysts with 3 YOE working at a mid company specializing in Health Care. My current TC is 80k I’m looking to increase my overall TC and the only way for me to see that happening is to become a data engineer With the current job market, Im stuck on what to do. Should I advance to learn more about Data Science/ Data Analysis and applying to more senior roles? Or should I learn Data Engineering and become a Data Engineer? I know they are different skillsets but I enjoying doing both. At this point, Im just willing to do learn anything to boost my TC and be employable. My goal has been always one day to working at MAANG/ Microsoft/ Intel. What would be the best course of action for me given my ultimate goal is to join one of the big tech? Please give me your input, anything would be greatly appreciated. YOE: 3 TC: 80k Business Analyst looking to pivot to Data Science or Data Engineering
I would apply for senior business analyst roles. Most DE roles are senior and the entry level junior market is complete shit right now. Every company has messy data but most companies don’t want to risk an inexperienced DE making costly cloud mistake when touching their data or accidentally deleting a production table/view. Having 3 yoe that is enough time now to get a senior role as a business analyst. Best of luck. TC 80
If the goal is to join big tech, the top prio is not actually to care about being de/ds/ba. The goal is do one of the three at a company that is industry/vertical adjacent to specific functions at a FAANG. For meta, something ads or social network. For Google, search, ads, cloud. etc. You will find that skills without certain biz context similarities do not translate that well. second priority is improving skills regardless. Even working as a BA, learning DE skills and DS just to boost BA work is not a loss. No pivots required.
Thank you, this is really insightful. Will definitely keeps learning.
Both are fine goals. If you apply to work at Amazon as a BA. Plan on moving to Data Scientist, Data Engineering, BA manager, or Program Manager.
Thank you :) I will definitely get all the skills since all the role ate most likely overlap with one another
I’m leaving Amazon. Look around on Blind for a referral for BA. You’ll probably get L4 or maybe L5 if there’s no python requirement. Pick up Tableau and play with Tableau Public to learn Amazon QuickSight.
